Moscow
Fastfood and Takeaways.
Fastfood
in Moscow is popular enough, though it might be safe to guess that
worldwide
chains are not what you came for to Russia. Anyway, Sbarro (Italian
fastfood: pizzas, pasta and stuff) - Manezhnaya square, Tverskaya
street (100 meters down the street from Tverskaya metro), and Domodedovo
airport; Pizza
Hut - Pyatnitskaya street (metro Novokuznetskaya,
then walk to the left on Pyatnitskaya street or walk out of Tretyakovskaya
metro and walk in the direction of Pyatnitskaya street); KFC -
Arbat street (between Arbatskaya and Smolenskaya metros); and McDonald$ -
everywhere, especially near BP petrol stations. The
snacks are sold on the streets (hot-dogs, sandwiches),
but I don't eat them cause I'm afraid and they aren't tasty and
healthy and I don't eat meat anyway.
But what makes Moscow's fastfood significant are "Kroshka-Kartoshka" and "Teremok" pancake
stalls.
Kroshka Kartoshka Stalls ("Baby Potatoe")
 |

specialized
in potatoes. They bake a potatoe, then lance it and stuff it with
cheese, salads, fish - whatever you choose. This
is very tasty and substantial. One such potatoe is enough for a
hungry person. A potatoe with cheese is for 24 R ($0.8), and every
stuff is additional 8 R ($0.25). They don't have restaurants (sometimes
just small cafes outside of the stalls) and sell the potatoes in
the green stalls. There are many of their cabins in the central
part of the city so you will find it.
Teremok Pancake Stalls (Russian
Pancakes). There aren't so many of them like Kartoshkas but still
enough. They prepare
Russian pancakes. They do it in
your presence and you can choose any stuff to put in the pancake.
A standard pancake without fillings costs 30 roubles (1$).
Some stalls are located on Pushkinskaya square (Tverskaya metro),
near Pyatnitskaya street (metro Tretyakovskaya or Novokuznetskaya).
Prime
Shop Moscow
This
downtown cafe serves healthy fast food: salads, sandwiches,
soups, yogurts, coffee,
teas, and fresh fruits. Central location
makes it a great option
for breakfast before launching on a tour
of
Moscow sights. Prime is a favourite among local office types, students,
and foreigners, and the only setback is that it's a bit pricey (sandwiches
start at $3, soups - $2.5). Nice open-air cafe in summer on Kamergersky
lane. Delivery in the nearby areas is available. Opened from 8.30 until
23.00 daily.
Address: Location 1: Moscow, Kamergersky pereulok
#5/7 (metro Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya - see
map), tel.: (095) 229-50-11;
Location 2: Moscow, Arbat st., #9 (metro Arbatskaya - see
map),
(095) 739-00-14.
Cheap
Eats. Among
other budget fastfood options are university cantines.
One of these is located in GITIS theater school, which is near Arbat metro,
another
is at MARKhI architecture institute (metro Kuznetsky Most, Rozhdestvenka
street - see where the young people with big posters and long scarves walk
from). A great option is Moscow State University main building
(metro Universitet or Vorobyovy Gory, near observation deck), which is
not central but has about 4(!) cantines in the main building all serving
quite good food.
A meal there will cost something like $3 if not less. Many universities
have pass control system, but if you just blurt something in a foreign
language, the guards will most likely let you in. Just walk through as
if you're a student or a teacher.
