Bed and breakfasts and minihotels in St. Petersburg have good reputation for their quality, warm atmosphere, lower prices, and personal approach to clients. Below we list a few recommended bed & breakfast and mini-hotels that we find to be the best in St. Petersburg.
All these Bed & Breakfasts should be reserved beforehand, because the owners need to know when and what time to expect you.
 

Swiss Star Bed & Breakfast

Opened in April 2006, SwissStar is a great bed and breakfast option. The Swiss owner has obviously gone to a lot of effort to create a hostel where all details are taken care of, including floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, climate control in each room, an independent water supply and heating system, free wi-fi for guests. The simple design is the perfect complement to beauty of the city outside. SwissStar has eight rooms: five comfort rooms with their own private bathroom ($70 in low season/$119 in high season) and three basic rooms with a shared bathroom ($60 low season/$85 high season). These prices are for double occupancy. Single occupancy is cheaper and there is also a discount if you stay five days or more. The prices include a self-service breakfast as well as unlimited tea and coffee and registration is provided for an extra 650 rubles. The hotel is attended from 9am-5pm daily by staff who come to clean and can answer any questions for guests. Bad features are hard to find, though the location a good 10-15 minutes walk from Nevsky Prospekt might be a problem for some. But SwissStar is right near Sennaya Ploshchad/Sadovaya metro stations, making the whole city easily accessible. It is also just a short walk from the Pik Shopping Center.

Griboedova Bed & Breakfast.

An agreeable private bed & breakfast owned by a Swiss young men (Taddeo) who's lived in Russia for the last 10 years, studying Russian language and philology. The bed & breakfast is perfectly located on the first floor of a residential building in St. Petersburg center, just behind Kazansky Cathedral on Griboedova channel (1 minute walk from Nevsky Prospekt!).
There are four different characterful rooms (single, doubles, triples) all very neat and nicely decorated with abstract paintings. There's also a kitchen and a meeting room where you can cook a tea or a meal and chat with other travelers.
Prices vary and depend on the season: low season - 40 euros single room. 60 euros double room, high season (may, june, july, august) - 65 euros single room, 80 euros double room. Rooms are usually full, so it is strongly recommended to reserve beforehand.
The owner, Taddeo, has two other B&B, so if he's completely full, he might be able to recommend something else.

5. Sovetskaya Bed & Breakfast.

This private B&B is located in the old historical city center of St.Petersburg in about a 7-minute walk from Nevsky Prospect and Moskovsky train station (where the trains from Moscow arrive) in an apartment of an old historical building.
It is owned and run by a German-Russian couple. The owner Nils Kalle is taking a position of Quality Director at the 5-star Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg, so expect to be treated like a VIP.
The rooms are quite spacious and there is underfloor heating, there is a computer with internet connection in the hall, as well as a kitchen, which is also used as a meeting room.
In all there are 4 rooms in this Bed & Breakfast and the prices start from $60 for a single to $125 for a quadruple accommodation. During the low season the prices are from $30 or $60 per night (for single and double occupancy), and during the peak season (April- Sentember, Christmas holidays), the prices go up $35-70 per night. Bigger rooms can be occupied by even 3 or 4 people meaning a slight increse in price. Children can stay for free with their parents. The hostel provides extra services such as airport transfer, reigistration and invitation. The whole B&B has free wireless internet connection to use with your laptops!

Andrey and Sasha Homestay

Definitely one of the best and most authentic places to stay in St. Petersburg. The owners – photographer Andrey and doctor Sasha are a super friendly and welcoming couple, who love to travel themselves. The homestay has three locations all right in center in a walking distance from main sights and metro stations, with a lot of restaurants and bars around.

The main homestay is located near the crossroads of Gorohovaya Street and Griboedova Channel Embankment 5 minutes on foot from Sennaya metro station. There are four bedrooms: one big room with fireplace, one big room with bathroom ensuite and 2 smaller rooms. Center of the apartment is a kitchen with a fireplace, where Andrey and Sasha host dinners for their guests, cook barbeques and salmon on grille. The second apartment is located down Gorohovaya Street closer to the Admiralty. There are two big bedrooms, a kitchen and two bathrooms. This is a perfect choice for families or couples on romantic holidays. Through the window in the kitchen you can get to the roof and enjoy spectacular views over St. Petersburg’s skyline. The third apartment has only one room for rent and is usually occupied by foreign students taking language courses at St. Petersburg State University, as it is just round the corner.

All apartments are very clean; there are washing machines, kitchen appliances. You can use free wi-fi, drink as much as you can tea, coffee and vodka (!). There is also a good collection of DVDs to pass away time, if you feel like staying inside. It is a homestay, but you shouldn't expect to see a typical Russian apartment. Andrey and Sasha have redecorated apartments themselves with Venice being their inspiration. The sound proofing is very well done, so if other guests are partying in the kitchen you can still enjoy sweet dreams in your comfy bed in the room next door.

Sasha and Andrey go out of their way to make sure their guests have great time in Russia. They can pick you up from bus and train stations, airport and even from Helsinki. Wanna see ballet? The owners will help you get discounted tickets, as well as rent bikes and even take you on tour to the real Russian village.

The price is negotiatable and varies depending on season, number of guests and length of stay. On average a single room will cost you about 50 euros, double room - 70 euros, while during high season it will be about 40 euros per person. Another option for bigger companies is to pay 140 euros and rent the whole apartment on Gorohovaya that accomodate up to 9 people. Booking is done personally via email, so sometimes it might take a longer time to get your email replied. Summer months are usually quite busy, so it’s better to book in advance, especially if you are more than two.

Casa Leto

Probably the classiest, small-scale accommodation in St Petersburg. That is to say it’s the highest quality “boutique hotel” going. There are five rooms, each named after Italian architects of St Petersburg – Trezzini, Rossi, Rastrelli, Quarenghi and Rinaldi. The difference between the rooms is the size, the lavishness of furnishings and the bathroom facilities. Room prices vary accordingly. In the lowest season prices range between €180 (7000 roubles) for the Trezzini room and €231 (9000 roubles) for the Rinaldi and Rossi rooms while in the highest season these rooms cost € 218 (8500 roubles) and €283 (11000 roubles) respectively. They also have special offers with discounts. All rooms feature Satellite TV, a DVD player and heated floors in the bathroom. The prices include free wireless internet, international phone calls, breakfast, refreshments, soft drinks and an incredibly high level of service. Registration can be done for €18 (700 roubles). Casa Leto also provides interpreter services, can organize for you airport transfer, help you register etc. The hotel has a non-smoking policy, which means it’s down to the street if you want to light up. Casa Leto really accentuates the feel of St Petersburg with its sumptuous interior, decorated with antiques, and the environment is imbued with serenity. Even the staircase up to the second storey hotel is atmospheric. Just a few minutes walk from the Winter Palace and St Isaac’s, this is the place to stay if you want to do St Petersburg in style.
