Hello,
our trip takes more than 90 days before we enter Russia, so we have to apply abroad. Is there a Russian embassy in Kathmandu/Nepal? The list here says no, but found an adress elsewhere. Any experience with this embassy? (Alternative would be Beijing or Mongolia, which are not recommended.)

Applying in Beijing or Mongolia is pain in the ass, because the consulates there are full of crazy people. Only Shanghai in China would work OK.

There IS a Russian consulate in Nepal. You can actually see a full list of Russian consulates worldwide on the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry webpage at http://www.mid.ru/zu_r.nsf/straconsweb

Here's the contacts of the Russian consulate in Nepal:
Tel: (+9771) 441-2155, 441-1063
Fax: (+9771) 441-6571
E-mail: rusconsul@mos.com.np

The only problem you may encounter is that there's a recent directive from Russian MID which doesn't allow you to get a Russian visa in the country you're not a resident of ONLY IF the same applies to Russian citizens in your country. If you're from EU, there should be no problems. However, you might need to get "registered" in Nepal before you get a visa. Maybe it's easily possible though -- just getting a paper from a hostel you're staying there for more than 3 months...

I'd say try it and if it doesn't work you can also send your passport while you're in Nepal back home, apply for a visa, have it sent back to you in Nepal. Costly and a bit risky, but if you use some good courier post with insurance -- not too bad, especially considering it might be your only option.
