I need some help. I am american citizens and have a girlfriend in Russia. I have the invitation letter and just waiting for my visa now. We will get married in Febuary 2008.. but the only document required by the registration office is that I show legal proof that currently i am not married. Does anyone have any idea of where i can get this document?....John

And get it translated to Russian, stamped by Notary Public and another stamp from a Russian consulate .... Stuff the document in an envelope with a 100$-bill "just in case".
Don't know where you're heading but in SPb and Moscow, there are speciela SAGZ for foreigners and you may end up paying foolish sums for services that are not mandatory.

I got married in Ufa and had to register at the Main Marriage Hall, instead of the local (next block) but still no fees, no silly arrangements, nothing (apart from a box of fine Swedish chocolate to the person who put os on the waiting list).
