Maybe someone could help ...

A group of 4 of us plan to visit Russia in June. We will arrive (on the overnight bus from Tallinn) in St Petersburg on Friday, stay in a hostel Friday night, leave on Saturday night on the overnight train to Moscow - again staying 1 night in a hostel before flying to Berlin on the Monday.

As our trip will only involve being in Russia for 2 working days (Friday and Monday) does this mean we do not have to register our visas - or will we run into difficulties at the airport when we are leaving if our visas are not registered?

If the hostel offers to register the visa, would we be better to get it done?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

With that itinerary you don't need to bother with registration. If the hostel wants to put a stamp on your migration card, let them.

NO ONE needs to (or has the right to) stamp your migration card any more! All registration is done electronically - there is no proof that you have been registered in your passport or on your card.

How is this verified by the officers then? I will be staying in Moscow and spending 1 night in St. Pete's. I'm still unclear about the registration process if I rent an apartment from someone on Way to Russia

Do they take your passport away when you register? The apartment manager told me they could register for me. However, I will be flying in on a Monday, but plan on taking a train to St. Pete's on Wednesday for an overnight stay. I will then return to Moscow the next day and leave the following Sunday. If they take my passport away I obviously will not be able to travel to St. Pete's. And if I don't get it registered within the first three days Monday - Wednesday I will have an illegal visa when I return to Moscow on Thursday. So again, can I register the same day (Monday) I arrive without giving my passport away?
