Will,
It is cheaper to buy your ticket from Moscow directly. For instance, the real price ticket for Moscow to Irkoutsk in 3rd class is about $46, etc. I do not have the real price for the "whole-in-one-go" journey as I will be making stop-overs.
Nevertheless and as I have posted it under the "ask a question" branch, I read the tariffs are likely to increase up to 100% during peak season i.e June to September...
The new prices are not out yet.
Hope that helps,

The price for Trans-Siberian varies greatly. It depends on many factors: the specific train you're taking, availability of additional service, class (1st, 2nd, 3rd), time of the year, etc.
For example, there are very good trains that go from Moscow to Irkutsk, they are cleaned daily, you get nice neighbors, breakfasts, clean toilets, running on schedule etc. -- there's no 3rd class (platzcart) in these trains, only the 1st and 2nd class -- and the 2nd class costs about $130-$150 one way.
There's also a slower train without any service and quite dirty (you won't be able to go to the toilet sometimes, it stinks so much), and with a lot of people who change on every station, so you always get new neighbors, in such train you can get a ticket for about $60-$70 in 3rd class (common carriage - platzcart) but I don't know if you will handle 4 days in it. Well, you will, but then you may have phobia of train travel, unless you're very tough or poor...
Myself, when I was traveling in Siberia, I was using different trains to check them out. Basically, I found that you should never take the cheapest 3rd class for long distances, as it's quite annoying, it's better to take a 3rd class in a good train (which may be slightly more expensive) but then you get "constant" neighbors, security, and your train is cleaner also. Also, 3rd class is always OK for short distances.,
Actually, you never know which train is what, but this price on our site quoted by the advertiser (the agency who sells train tickets) is for the good train, so you pay the extra for 1) comfort; 2) knowledge on which train is better; 3) ability to order on the internet beforehand; 4) delivery.
If you don't need any of the above, then my advice to you is to buy your ticket in Moscow.
You also have another option: to buy a plane ticket, which is not so much more expensive, but much faster. http://waytorussia.net/Services/AirlineTickets.html |
