| My trip has changed and will be in St. Petersburg in June instead of April, we want to go to the Kremlin by train for a day trip. Are there cheaper prices on the train from St. Pete to Moscow for this trip? Also, we were considering taking the train to Siberia after the trip to the Kremlin, how long is the ride on the train to Siberia from Moscow, anybody know? |

St Petersburg to Moscow is about an eight hour trip by train. you would have to get a night train from about 2200 onwards, to have a full day on Moscow. They are not cheap and demand is high in June. Pick your days too in respect of what you want to see in Red Square.
If you are planning to go on the Trans Siberian immediately after your Kremlin tour, to answer your question, it would help to know where in Siberia you were going to leave the train. |

Commercial speed for most trains is about 60 km/h. So it is about 1d 10hr from Moscow to the nearest city that can be considered Siberia ( Tyumen ) |

I checked, from Moscow to Barnul. How long is this ride?
Does the Kremlin stay open everyday for tours or is it only a few days a week? |

It seems that a train trip will be a long, dragged out ride. I would like to see the country, but the train is too slow. Are there other trains that will get us to Moscow quicker? I know this trip will not be cheap, I would like to avoid being too long on a train, no more than 2 days.
Would it be cheaper to fly instead or are the prices about the same? |

The Kremlin appears to be closed at random times for "security" reasons, or so it seemed to me when I visited last June/July. You may be lucky, you may not.
Technically it is open every day except Thursday.
From http://www.kreml.ru/en/main/info/
"Opening days & hours
The Moscow Kremlin’s territory and museums open daily, except Thursdays, from 10:00 to 17:00. The Armoury Chamber has seances at 10:00, 12:00 , 14:30, 16:30." |

there are much quicker trains between St. Petersburg and Moscow which take around 5 hours but they are much more expensive. there are like 10 trains a day going to Moscow (slow and fast) so you'd always be able to get a ticket the same or next day you travel. |

Thanks for answering. Would you happen to know some prices for first class? Have you ever rode the train from St. Pete to Moscow? If so, how was the ride?
How is the first class on these trains? If I was to pay for a first class berth, is it just the one time berth price or will I be charged twice if my friend is with me, sharing the same berth? We were going to split the price between us. Any idea? |

Hi. You will definitely have to pay for your friend as well, because the price is per ticket, 1st class has 2 berths so you have to pay for 2 tickets. (unless there is a luxe class all for just 1 person which i don't know about and in this case i assume you don't have to pay for your friend because you've already paid for the whole thing). I only ever rode "normal" class, i think it's like 2nd. I took slow trains overnight so it was just fine, you sleep and you usually buy tickets with your friends so no other people in your room but even if you have someone it didn't bother me.
For the fast train (looking at tomorrow for example) there are only sitting places left (not sure what class is it, train takes 4 and half hours) - train 165A, leaving SPb at 18:30 getting to Moscow around 23:00. For another fast train 159A (for tomorrow as well) leaving 16:00 getting to Moscow at 21:00 there are 3 types of sits left - luxe, coupe (4 berth i think) and sitted. |

I caught the 1st class sleeper from Moscow to SPb.
You definitely have to pay for 2 tickets if you have 2 people. They are quite nice compartments, and the food isn't too bad either |

JoJo,
IMHO a first class berth on an overnight train just isn't worth it. You get on at around 11:00pm and you're in Moscow at 07:00 am. Of the trips I've been on it, just about everyone hits the hay as soon as possible to get some shut-eye.
IIRC Barnaul is off a spur at Novosibirsk. It'll take up to 48 hours on a "fast firmenny" train, then you have to change for Barnaul. You could get lucky and find a Mow-Barnaul direct. I'd still reckon you're up for a 2 1/2 day trip. Have you checked the schedules on www.poezda.net ? Their times are very accurate.
From St P you get in at Leningradski station which is a stones throw from Yaroslavl where the majority of siberian trains leave from. The other siberian trains leave from Kazansky, a cigarette butt flick away from Yaroslavl.

Thanks for replying and thanks for the link, this is helpful. I see that this is a very long trip to Barnaul. My chance to see some country....What is the temperature like on these trains in June, decent or are they hot? |

I will disagree slightly, and say it depends on the situation of the travellers.
If you are a couple, the privacy of the 2 person 1st class compartment can be a good thing.
(Or at least, that is how I found it ) |
