I am currently living in Saint Petersburg and am planning a trip on the railway in August. I have been travelling alone in Russia but don't really want to go on the railroad by myself. So I'm looking for friends who are planning to go on the railway.

Hi Arwen,
I'm also preparing a trip on the railway. I'm planning to go from Moscow to Irkutsk, making several stops. My dates are starting on August the 2nd and arriving to Irkutsk on August the 14th or 15th. Which dates do you have in mind? And what are your plans?
If you want to get in touch with me, my e-mail is: dajimar2002@yahoo.com

I am pretty sure that I will be in Moscow on the first or second and am planning on staying there for about a week and then progressing on the railway. Do you know where you want to stop?

Let me know,
Arwen

Hi, Arwen!

I 've just come from the travel agence for arrange all the plane and train tickets, so i can tell you exactly what, where or when.

i arrive 2nd in the morning to Moscow, and that day i have a reservation at Hotel Ukraina for one night. ( during the day i must to get the mongolian visa at the mongolian embassy, it takes 2-3 hours usually, as far as i've been told.

the 3th at night i leave Moscow to get to Ulaan Bataar on sunday 8th

I stay there ( gobi, karakorum, etc) one week ( i still have no idea about where to stay there, family host, or youth hostelling international, if there is one) and on sunday 15th , train to Beijing, arriving there one and a half days later. In Beijing i have also a reservation for one night only at Hotel International .

My flight back to Madrid is 22th from Shanghai, so i'll be going down along the railroad to get to Shanghai.

it'll be nice if there are coincidences between our travel plans, and even we can already set a meeting point at some part of Moscow., if you want and you finally will be there at those dates.

Gonzalo.

Sorry to tell you guys this but a travel resource told me there are NO HOSTELS in Mongolia!! The best thing you can try to do is find a hotel to stay at or a home stay but use caution Shame on you The Black Death is still a diesase that you can catch in Mongolia when staying with people who have marmats for pets.

there may not be places called 'hostels' (I'm not sure) but there are guesthouses. I'm staying at the UB Guesthouse in July/ August. They've been great in arranging trips for us, etc and are seemingly great folk. Cheap too. A quick google search will bring up places to stay that are essentially hostels.

Thanks for the info!

I'll arrive to UB Sunday 8th, and i'll stay there one week, time enough, i hope, to see some places.

So, maybe, see you there.

Hey Arwen,

I'm also leaving Moscow on the 2nd of August to Irkutsk where I'm staying for about a week in a hostel.
(Then to Ulan Ude and Vladivostok)

Let me know more details if you want to hook up for the long train ride.

A "FYI" for you all,
A person near Moscow who bought my train tickets for me couldn't buy any tickets leaving Aug. 1st because that day was sold out and one train was canceled. I had to take tickets for Aug 2nd or Aug. 31st. Of course, this might change, but I thought it might be helpful to all of you when planning your trip.

Did you mean July 31st or are they really booked for the entire month of August?

Thanks,

Oh no no no! Just the day of August 1st leaving from Moscow to Irkutsk. Specifically it was Train #010 that was canceled for that day only. And the other trains leaving from Moscow to Irkutsk were sold out for Aug. 1st. I had to buy a ticket for Aug. 2nd.
