Part of the Russian visa support (which is needed to obtain a Russian visa) is the reservation confirmation, however, another part, which you will be missing, if you just book accommodation is a tourist voucher, which lists your itinerary. Travel agencies that provide full visa support (like the ones advertised on this site) provide both tourist vouchers and reservation confirmations, and with these papers you are free to travel where you want as well (not being bound to one hotel only).
