|
|
Hello!
We will be arriving in Moscow (Domodedovo airport) on 10 June morning, and we leave 17 June morning. During this time, we would like to see Moscow and St Petersburg.
With the timing that we have, we are confused whether we should:
(a) see Moscow first, then head to St P, and then back again to Moscow to depart Russia, or
(b) travel on our first day to St P and do that first, and then see Moscow.
Also, with the transport, do you suggest we travel between Moscow and St P by plane, or train or a combination of both?
Finally, there are two public holidays on 12 and 13 June (is that right?). Does this mean most/all places of interest will be closed?
Thanks in advance for your comments and help!

Only 7 days, then fly. You will not have enough time to take the train.

SPB is going to be zoo, because it will be white nights time and there will much celebration going on. Hermitage alone is at least 2 days to see and Petergof is another place. SPB requires at least a week by itself.
SPB is more culture and European. Moscow is more business and Russian.
I think you just do not have enough time to enjoy these two cities. |

Thanks for your response!
Yes I was concerned that there may not be enough time... but unfortunately that is all the leave I have.
Is it easy to get from Domodedovo to the other airport which I believe the domestic flights take-off from? How long should I allow in between? My plane lands at Domodedovo at 9.30am.
I was thinking maybe I could take an overnight train? That could save time.
Any suggestion whether I should do Moscow or SPB first?
So many questions.. sorry!
Thanks again

I spent 10 days in SPD during white nights and STILL didn't see everything I wanted to see. Moscow I did in a week and I think I am done there.
You fly into Domodedovo? I thought Domodedovo WAS the domestic fligth airport.
But definitely fly. You don't have enough time as it is and don't want to spend another 2 nights on a train. |

I'd be looking for a domestic flight either from Domodedovo to St Petersburg on the morning you arrive, or to from St Petersburg to Domodedovo on the morning you leave. Seems you waste the least time this way. Just take an overnight train in between.
Alternatively, you could spend your first three days in Moscow, take an overnight train to St Petersburg, then come back to Moscow by train the night before you leave and head straight to the airport when you arrive in Moscow.
Personally I think both cities are worth equal time. But most people seem to favour St Petersburg. |

Thanks for that.. sort of what I was thinking re the overnight train.
Do you have any suggestions as to how or which company I can use to book the train tickets? I would like to get them before I arrive in Russia.
Also, is it best to book Aeroflot tickets via their website?

Sure, go to:
www.trains.waytorussia.net
There are three different vendors you can choose from. I would recommend you send a request to a couple of them and choose whichever one you think is best.
Aeroflot flies out of Sheremetyevo airport. So if you want to line the flight up with your arrival or departure to/from Domodedovo then it's better to choose a different airline. The transfer between airports is a hassle. You can book with the airline directly or try here:

I see SkyExpress flies Moscow to Saint Petersburg and return. Anyone flown with SkyExpress? If yes, how was your flight? |

Try to escape from Moscow for June 12 and around this date - this holiday is one of the worst days in the capital (I have experiences it several times) when Red square is closed, the entire centre is closed for traffic and pedestrians (for unclear periods without proper information even for policemen guarding the territory) - also metro stations in the centre are closed.
To fly to St.Petersburg and back you can use also the Rossiya company, based in St.Petersburg (www.pulkovo.ru). S7 has got a flight at about 14.20 - I have just used it 2 weeks ago.
Skyexpress - a risky affair, the first Russian lowcoster with only one daily flight to St.Petersburg from Vnukovo; recently their flying license was stopped for a while (may be not due to their fault - but it is no easier for those missing flights). |

Thanks for the information.
I went to http://www.skyexpress.ru/en// and read they fly Boeing 737. No mention of Tupelev aircraft. A low cost airline in the U.S. had to cancel many flights recently because of concerns of inadequate inspection of aircraft. Their ticket holders probably weren't happy to miss flights either. |

So, you can use all enumerated airlines. The most popular are Aeroflot and Transaero. I agree with Andrey SkyExpress is a bit risky, as for me
It is convinient to use train. there are a lot of departures every day evening, which depart almost every minute
As for 12, 13 of June...i am not sure the Kremlin and Moscow's center will be closed. It is not such great as V-day or something like that.
And it does not matter how long to be in moscow or petersburg.
Petersburg is more calm, its infrastructure is not so developed as moscow's. this city like cultural center without harry, but at the same time it is not so bright and active like moscow.
If you want i can help you with some details concerning moscow (maybe some sights). |
