Hi fellow travellers,

Am planning to go from London to St Petersburg in June for 10 days. Flights look pretty pricey, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips of how to get there cheaply.

I've tried looking at budget flights and then trains onto Russia from Estonia, Latvia and Finland, but all the trains seem really expensive on-line, although I really do fancy the idea of a bit of train travel.

Is it possible to just turn up and get on a train, or do you need to book a ticket before hand, and if so, does anyone have any tips on a good web site. Also, how much should I expect to pay?

Are there any ferry routes that anyone can recommend.

Any help you can give me would be gratefully received, as I have spent all afternoon and evening searching the internet, and have got absolutely nowhere! How sad am I?

Thanks very much,

Soundgirl

You can look at Eurolines bus to SPB also. You will see details on this site.

I don't know how pricey you mean with pricey, but I paid about 199 Euro (single trip) with SAS from Brussels to SPB..
So that's only a ferry and train away from you...
The time before I took Germanwings from Köln in Germany and they do trips for 19 Euro single sometimes!! (not including taxes...)

Try to compare flying Easy Jet to Tallinn - with possibility to have one of 5-6 daily buses to St.Petersburg by Eurolines or a night daily train - to Ryanair to Riga - with only one night bus available - or a night train.
One more version: Ryanair to Tampere - arriving about 10.30 p.m. (we have flown with my wife to London form there - 2 returns - at about 73 euros - inclusive all the taxes, charges and luggage) - with another 500 km to St.Petersburg. Also Germanwings and Airberlin fly to St.Petersburg - but prices greatly vary on dates...
