Greetings, I have a multi entry business visa that I have used several times to get in and out of Russia with. However, it expires on December 31 2004 and I would like to be in Russia with friends during new years as I have done for several years in the past.

Is there anyway to extend my stay so that I can actually be in Russia (SPb) during new years eve and new years day. could I apply for a visa of any type that would start on New Years day prior to arriving in Russia? Or if I must leave, do I have to leave on the 31st or can I leave on the 1st of the year and then go to helsinki and get a tourist visa that same day?

The major thing in this case, is that expires on the one day that I would really like to be in Russia rather than traveling out of the country to renew my visa.

Thanks,
Jeff K.

Hi Jeff,

Unfortunately multi entry visas are not extended in Russia. By law your visa will expire on Dec 31 exactly at 00:00 and you won't be able to leave on the 1st.

If you visa expires you'll have to stay in Russia and get an exit visa to be able to leave. That's a long, expensive and troublesome process.

I suggest you do the following: if you will be travelling to Russia before New Year (like in October), you may ask the frontier guards to "close" your visa when you will be leaving. They do it upon request and that will enable you to apply for a new visa for your New Year Eve.

Meanwhile you can get another multi-entry invitation and then use it for your new visa. Invitations are valid for exactly one year, so you may order it now to make sure it will be processed on time and use it later.

Good luck,

Natalia
