On my way through Russia with the Trans-Siberian railway I'm planning to take a break in Irkutsk and then go by myself to Ulan Ude. And then continue on the train to Beijing via Mongolia.

I am hoping it is possible to ride with the bus to Listvyanka, then with a boat/ferry/hydrofoil to Novoselenginsk, and then further to Ulan Ude with bus or train. Novoselenginsk could be changed to another city along the south-eastern shore of Lake Baikla (e.g. Tankhoy).

Could anybody tell me if this is possible, and where I could look for the timetables; my biggest concern is to get from Listvyanka to the eastern shore.

Help will be appreciated!

Hi,
You can't take a ferry across Baikal from Listvyanka (neither anywhere else on Baikal). You could take a ferry to Port Baikal (opposite shore of Angara river) and then take a Circum Baikal (departs 3 times a week some time in the evening -- see our Baikal Guide for details).

From there you could get to Slyudyanka and either take a bus to Ulan-Ude or continue further along the shore to Baikalsk (possible) and further (will be quite hard, but possible too) to Selenginsk and then either to Gremyachinsk (for a real Baikal experience) or back to Ulan-Ude (to continue the trip).

See http://waytorussia.net/Baikal/MapBaikal.html -- good map
