joke number 12 The origin of inequality
Jean Jacques Rousseau is a famous french thinker of the eighteen century. He wrote a book to answer the question: what is the origin of inequality among men? The book title is "discourse on the Origin of Inequality". It tells us, inequaltity occures when men are organized in society. When man is in "the pure state of nature", he is "isolated (not organized in society) and peaceful.
| Quote: | | ...Rousseau describes natural man as isolated, timid, peaceful, mute, and without the foresight to worry about what the future will bring. |
man "in the pure state of nature" is not different from other animal except the the fact that he has the reason. but a not developed reason. That's why he is in the "pure state of nature"
| Quote: | | Rousseau says that unlike all other creatures, humans are free agents. They have reason, although in the state of nature it is not yet developed. |
So, the book says that the origin of inequality among men reslults of the development of the reason. When the reason is not developed, man is in "pure state of nature". He peaceful, nice, and doesn't oppress any one.
So, Rousseau wrote an entire book to tell us something that everybody knows: morons are innocuous.
Great joke, Jean Jacques source: http://www.iep.utm.edu/r/rousseau.htm#SH3b |
