Hi, My wife and I are looking forward to our short stay in Moscow. We depart the UK this Friday morning and return home late Sunday afternoon.
I have a few concerns that I'm hoping someone will address for me but I'm sure we'll have a great time.
1. If our stay is shorter than three days do we have to register with the authorities? If so, where and when?
2. Do we need to declare anything when we pass through customs? We won't have much of any value except a basic digital camera and our clothing.
3. I'm still unsure what clothes to take. I don't generally get cold easily although my wife does. Is the weather like the UK weather for this time of the year? I'm generally a jeans, shirt and trainers kind of guy. Are these too casual for a short tourist visit? Is a jumper plus jacket advisable?
4. We're arriving at Domodedovo airport and our hotel is the Maxima Irbis Hotel at 1 Gostinichnaya str., Moscow. I've checked the various ways to get to out hotel but can anyone suggest an easy, not too expensive, way to get from airport to hotel?
5. I meant to learn some basic Russian but it looks like it won't happen now before we go, though I will make an effort with my phrase book, so am I likely to have any major problems. The hotel tells me that they do speak English which will help. |

I assume that hotel will register you anyway.

Yesterday it was +10C, forecasts for Sunday vary from +20 to +28C.
Seems that jumper is a bit overkill.

Aeroexpress to Paveletskaya station, then metro to Tveskaya, change line to Chekovskaya, then to Petrovsko-Razumovskaya - (M) in left bottom corner, and then walk to north-east toward railroad pedestrian cross. On its other side is Gostinichnaya str, bldg. 1K12 is on the map. |

Hi, Just wanted to say thanks for the fast reply. We have one more full day here in England before flying out to Moscow. My wife and I are a little nervous because we haven't been to many countries that don't speak either English or French, so it's mainly the language problem that's the reason. I'm sure we'll manage fine and that we'll get all the help we need.
We're really looking forward to our Moscow Tour on Saturday morning; that was part of the prize I won.
Thanks again for your advice, I did also check the weather forecast myself and Friday & Saturday have full sun symbols plus temperatures abt 23/24C. Sunday being cloudy with sunny intervals. |

Russians are known for being practical, so don't be surprised when you see the railroad pedestrian crossing. If it's the same crossing I used to get to the Metro station from a Maxima hotel on that street. You don't have to run unless you see the train coming but don't poke along either. I didn't see a train when I used the crossing so I don't know if the train blows its horn when approaching that crossing. |

2. No, you don't need to declare anything.
5. Yes, I've been to that hotel and the staff spoke decent English as I recall. Elsewhere, the language barrier will occasionally be a problem but you'll manage.
By the way, the hotel is a decent walk from the metro station - about 15 minutes from memory. But I guess you won't be carrying too much luggage on a three day trip. |

Thanks to both gomer and greg222 for the latest advice offered. We will be careful crossing that railway line and we will be travelling light with small, wheeled, carry ons.
Now we have to go to town to buy those carry ons! |

You should be careful at any crossing, drivers here do not usually stop to let pedestrians cross the road. When we go abroad, we get so used to a different attitude that at first we have problems when we return home.
Today the weather is brilliant but I would take a light jacket and an umbrella anyway, it may be cool in the evening. Plus, if you are going to visit Orthodox churches, it's advisable for your wife to cover her hair. Most foreigners do not do it, of course, but this is a must in our churches, so why not follow the rule?
Is your tour organised, I mean, are you going to have a guide? We have some lovely mansions in Moscow which are definitely worth seeing. They are not included in short tours but perhaps you could ask your guide to take you to Kuskovo or Tsaritsino. Kolomenskoye is also a very nice place and now we are having kind of a honey market (or fair) here, so you get a chance to try it. |

[quote="Rattlerbytes"]Hi, My wife and I are looking forward to our short stay in Moscow. We depart the UK this Friday morning and return home late Sunday afternoon.
I forgot - the city is going to be overcrowded these days, we celebrate Moscow Day every first weekend of September. I suppose, you can check the programme on the Internet althought I haven't done it yet.
To avoid disappointment, take care of your money, mobile and your credit cards. My husband usually keeps these things in a money belt. |
