very interesting article.
| Quote: | According to the report:
Assets are being removed from state ownership and handed over to the control of private people, property is being purchased with state money back from the oligarchs at stunning prices, a friends-of-Putin oil export monopoly is being created, and a Kremlin "black safe" [slush fund] is being funded. This is a brief outline of the criminal system of government that has taken shape under Putin. |
ok. the money goes in private pokets. And in other countries, for example, in the US or the UK, where goes the money of oil and gas? in workers bank accounts? if they have one.
and "oligarchs" what does it mean? |

| Quote: | | As for public health, the life expectancy for Russian men is less than fifty-nine years (on par with underdeveloped African countries), in large part because of the rise in smoking and alcohol abuse (Russia has an estimated 2.5 million alcoholics), ... And Russia's health care system is in crisis. Because of insufficient funds, poorly equipped hospitals, shortages of medicines, and widespread bribe-taking for medical services, health care of any reasonable quality is beyond the reach of most Russians. (This is confirmed by the World Health Organization, which in 2007 ranked health care in Russia 130th out of 190 countries, below Bolivia and Guyana.) |
Oh! most of russians have no acces to health care of reasonable quality, they are alcoholic and their life expectancy is less than 59 years... very good news for the rest of the world. Russia can't be a threat!
Even if Russia is not a communist coutry, it's true that the Kremlin could do something on social issues with all this money.
World Health Oragnisation, a reliable source of information. Just like the New York review of books |

"Russia braced for unrest"
Should the Russian government be worried? As has been done in the past, sometimes people will chance a quick death by military bullet in an uprising rather than a slow, sure and painful death by starvation. |

Not a chance. Putin will be bruised, but he is still immensely popular. Russia is starting to do what is right for the country and people will have live with less growth and no more instant wealth.
Do not forget that Russia has 400 billion left in reserves to fight this crisis.
Russian businessmen have learned that you do not always win when you gamble. They will be properly spanked and will be more conservative in tthe future.
If you are talking Ukraine, it is screwed. |

not only interesting but... great article!
| Quote: | | Instead of protecting civil rights, law enforcement agencies and courts use the law to advance the financial interests of powerful political clans or well-connected companies. This was the case with Mikhail Khodorkovsky, owner of the oil concern Yukos, who was arrested in 2003... |
Khodorovsky, and his group Youkos, was in favour of opening the russian energy market to foreign investors (especially US investors). Khodorovsky was associated to people (in Russia) which were willing to sell the russian ressources (oil and gas) to foreign companies.
| Quote: | | particularly grave failure of Putin's leadership has been the decline in the rule of law and respect for human rights. |
social justice, is the most important.
by the way, they have celebrated this year (in the UN) the 60th anniversary of the declaration of human rights in 1948... In this declaration, they've forgotten the most important right!

| Quote: | | Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa, the eleventh largest producer of crude oil in the world... In 2006, total Nigerian oil production, including lease condensates, natural gas liquids and refinery gain, averaged 2.45 million bbl/d (of which 2.28 million bbl/d was crude oil) ... |
source: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Nigeria/Oil.html
but, despite its wealth (oil and gas), Nigeria is still a very poor country.
The corruption of the nigerian regime is not the only cause of poverty. The nigerian wealth is stolen by western oil companies (Shell/Exxon Mobil/Chevron/Eni). That's the main cause of poverty there.
Thanks to Obasanjo, the wealth of Nigeria doesn't profit to the people of Nigeria but profits to western companies.
I think tt's better for russians interests to have "bad guys" like Medvedev and Putin at power.

Comparing yourself to Nigeria. I can see that you comparing yourself to a real great country.
Maybe you should look at Norway, Canada, or Great Britain as examples. |

In fact, western countries (like Great Britain and the US) thought they could treat Russia like an african country and take control of its oil and gas.
This almost happened when Yeltsin was at power... |
