I'm planning on going to Russia with a tourist visa and I will be staying with my girlfriend.

Half of the trip we may likely stay at her school hostel (I assume it's the equivalent of a dorm) and the other half we will be at her parents.

So my question is would she be able to register me? Or does the term "landlord" mean the actual owner of the complex and not the tenant.

If someone could clarify or add any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Btw, I've become addicted to this site.

I'm kind of surprised you can even stay at her dormitory - they often have fairly strict rules about guests staying overnight. Anyway, I can't see how she could register you there, but ask her to check with the administration of the dormitory.

Her parents could register you at their place.

I'm pretty sure you're right about the rules. Of course when I lived in a dorm in the US, 90% of what we did was against the rules.

Either way, it would seem we need to devise another scheme for registration. Thanks again for your help.

Although it does lead to a follow up question. If you're trying to register with someone who rents an apartment, would they be able to do the registration? Again this comes back to the question of does landlord mean the owner of the complex like here in the US or just the person who is renting the space.

Indeed. I'm just thinking that unless this dorm has particularly lax security, then the only way you can stay there will be by paying off the guards. Though I'm sure that will be cheaper than any other accommodation around...

The landlord is generally defined as the owner, but it can be anyone who has permanent registration at the apartment. Usually that will not be someone who is renting the place. See here and read through the comments as well (look for the comment by "Mattoni" in particular):

Greg you are my hero. I figured there must be something I didn't know about concerning who can register etc...

I didn't know about the existence of "propiska". Now it makes a lot more sense.

Again, thank you.
