Is there much of a difference in travelling to Moscow in August or September? Is the weather still decent in September? Less tourists?

I would recommend you to travel in September, because August is a vacation time for Russians and there's not much things happening at that time. Besides, the weather is hot which is not so good for a big city. September is a better time, especially the first half, as the weather is mild and all people come back from vacations, so it will be a lot of fun.
