Hello everybody...

I just happened to have this question. I am from Mexico, City but I have met some Russian people in the US. I actually worked with a Russian woman who was my boss for some time at the place I used to work. I`m not a racist or anything related to that ... as I think that everyone has the right to act and think the way they want as long as they respect others' rights and feelings. But from my experience I would say that most Russian are deeply serious and cold... do you know the reason for this behaviour. Of course, I`m not saying that ALL Rusian people living in the US have that tendecy... but generally speaking is there a reason for that...?

I hope I won't be taken mistaken... as I just want to know more about people and their cultural background. During these days, our global village makes us interact with people from every corner of the world and I think it`s important to learn a bit on how to deal with differences in personalities so that we can be more tolerant... Smile

In your message, you seem to base your experience on one single russian lady you know at work. How is it possible to generalise about russian people since you know so few? Doesnt the work and hierarchy reliationship impose to be "deep and cold", especially in the US?

I met quite a few russians traveling in Russia from east to west, and most were welcoming, but often drunk. Does this mean that all russians are drunk? Certainly not, but it means that i stayed in places where people gather and drink (beaches, truck motels and cafes, holidays resorts...). The attitude of people is often less related to their culture but to how and where you meet them.

As for me I think russian people considered a smiling man as a screwed or mad man or as a foreigner Smile
If anybody is very happy he would not smile to everybody he would keep serious-minded face.

Instead of jumping to such a basless conclusion, why don't you try to get to know this person or get educated about Russia and Russians?

I think Cesar has asked a reasonable question and I think he he here because he is trying to learn more about Russian people and cultural differences. This topic has come up before and Cesar can probably look back at past threads under Russian myths, people etc.

Cesar, I think that Russians come across to many foreigners as more formal and reserved. I am not a sociologist and can't explain the reasoning behind this. Some reasons might be climate, a different type of government where trust is questionnable, a harder life, and I am sure there are other possible reasons. Russians however once you get to know them are kind and generous people.

I think of Latino culture as very open, warm people, even more so than Americans. These cultural difference in affect of people are interesting to me. It would be such a bore if everyone were the same.
