Just browsed in here. I found the discussions to be very interesting.

Does someone have information on how to get a Russian registered car out of Russia? I happened to find a true collectors item of a rare European car in St.Petersburg. I am interested in buying it. Don't care about the higher price compared to the EU. Me and the owner have already agreed on a price that I find O.K beeing those circumstances.
I am more curious on what charges I will see to get the car off-registered? I assume I am prohibited to drive the car on the previous owners plates. Is there an export license plate to buy and where do I get it? The seller has agreed to help out language-wise, but neither he does know how the get the vehicle off the register.

Also, I have the current reg-no on the car. Can I check somehow with the registration authorities (GAI?) to get the full VIN-no of the vehicle and maybe how many owners it has had?
Is it also possible to do a search at the GAI to find out if there are more vehicles of this kind registered in Russia?

Thanks for any help.

I have nothing to add that would help you but.....

Yeah! I have seen some amazing Russian cars that I would dearly have loved to have. Some of the older luxury Volgas that are To-Die-For. I've seen a couple of Russian all terrain, rhino proof, Arctic quality, go anywhere, 4 wheel drive Nevas that I coveted. I did consider how in gods name I could get those back to America because they were killer and I wanted them bad.

Until it occurred to me that:
No parts would ever be available if needed
Everything about them is metric

But you are right. There are some absolutely delicious cars sitting around in Russia, unrecognized and unloved.

I hope you find a way. I wish you the best of luck in rescuing these unfortunate beauties. Bon Apetit.
