I am now a US citizen and have a US passport. I also have a Russian international passport which expired 4 years ago. I am planning to go to Russia in a few months to visit family. Is it worth the effort to try to renew my Russian passport or should I use my US passport and just get a russian homestay visa?

Your only advantage to having the russian one would be potentially saving on costs in places where they actually check the passport. But I don't know whether this is worth it or not. Back in 1998, I attempted to get a Ukrainian passport (I never had one because I left before I turned 16), and the wait was about 2 months.. So I hope things have improved since then.
