A simple question which Google as failed me Shocked, are there any Helicopter flight schools (for a commercial Pilots License) in Russia? I can't seem to find any. Also what do you think the job demand is for a Helicopter pilot? Does Russia have Life Flight, construction, etc. and what is the average cost of that, because here its going to cost me $100,000 at my local university to get the license and get my Associates in Applied Sciences... Sad. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have no knowledge specific to helicoptering but I'm making an educated guess here that 100% of all helicopter pilots in Russia come out of the military.

Probably near zero.

"Does Russia have Life Flight?"
No.

Join the US military and you won't have to ante $100,000 for civilian pilot training.


P.S. When you google for information specific to Russia doing it in English will yield very little. Gotta google in Russian.

alright, its just..crazy as this sounds the military won't take me. Asthma, and I wear glasses (no military flying). You would think this country would take anyone who knew how to say "yes, sir" Mad. Alright. Thank you for the information though. I appreciate it.

it's a matter of supply and demand - there are more people that want to be pilots with perfect health/vision/etc. than there are pilot slots.

You'd be MUCH better served, imho, by doing what all the other guys that want to get the ticket do - bust your ass to get your private & instrument & instructor licenses. Take out loans. Get a job with a flight school and build hours & experience teaching guys just like you to do the same thing. It's a lot harder than doing the same thing for fixed wing as there are so fewer (relatively speaking) quality helicopter schools. Or find a remote tour operator and do scut work for them for some time and have them teach you. I took a touring flight near Glacier National Park a few years ago and the guy that I went up with had a great life all worked out for himself - he had a home and business near the park and had a few choppers and was doing his thing. Of course he'd been working his ass of for 25 years or so and was a former military pilot. I was curious as to where he got his pilots from and he told me that he brought on new guys and taught them to fly in return for a commitment for a few years. He was a CFI and it seemed to be working for him.

So... lots of options here in the US. You'd be hard pressed to find the same type of opportunity in Russia, imho. Not speaking the language (assuming) would be a huge hindrance for you. Having said all of that, though, I'd bet you *could* find somebody to take your money and "train" you on helicopter flying. How much of that would translate to other certifications worldwide, though, is quite the guess.

Suppose, though, that you found the perfect opportunity and got trained and qualified on Russian equipment. Then what? You gonna live and work in Russia? Good luck with that.

Since you're talking about University, you sound young. Scholarships. Work work work.

Finally, have you any helicopter experience? It's more complex than airplanes - you should try it to ensure that you're captivated by it. Astigmatism kept me from flying for Uncle Sam (but that didn't stop them from handing me a rifle.... hmm... go figure), but I did it later in life getting my ASEL ticket, and then working towards the heli ticket. I was doing it on my own and it was expensive. I'd have liked to have finished, and may yet one day, but, damn, it's expensive. And a PP and even a commercial ticket for a helicopter doesn't get you much as you need to build hours before anybody will trust you. And how do you build several hundred hours in a helicopter? You pay for it. It's expensive. You can't just rent a helicopter and go for a long weekend trip with your girlfriend as easily as you can rent a Cessna or Piper or something.

Your dream isn't impossible, but it isn't easy either.

THe problem is that there's a very tight situation with private piloting schools in Russia. The laws do not have such type of schools listed. So these kind of schools do exist (I heard about some in Moscow) but their state is kinda not fully legal.
I know for sure that ther're airplane piloting schools, even for jet-piloting, in St.-Petersburg.
But I can't say anything for choppers, especially for prices.

As for the job - it will surely be connected with military, police or firefighters.

I've seen a TV show "Aviatory" (Aviators) recently. They said there are people who buy helicopters and they have to go helicopter scool before they can fly. It is in Russia. I think one can find such school through this TV show.

I seriously doubt the OP speaks a word of Russian? Even if such a school could be located how could he possibly function at such a level of study in a completely foreign language?

I think he just threw out a wild idea to see if it would *fly*. Youthful exuberance.

Someone sounds a little cranky?
Anyway I do not speak russian but right now I am learning it. I have the desire to fly, its been what I have wanted to do since I was 6. Taking formal classes for russian and using the Rosetta Stone software, which helped me learn German. So I think I have a good grasp for languages and, I'm applying for a job at a local airport (probably won't do anything but clean somebodies single engine, sweep the floors, probably cleaning bathrooms or some such manual labor but at my age, I think I just need the work experience. but its something.)

Will learn to operate helicopter

The curriculum to management of helicopter allows any person to receive from "zero" necessary skills of all for 42 hours of a practical training.

Upon termination of a curriculum you acquire the right to pass examination and to receive the certificate of the pilot-fan of civil aircraft of the state sample.

Duration of a curriculum depends on frequency of your individual employment. Usually it occupies about 3-4 months.

The program of retraining of the pilot from other type of the helicopter usually occupies 15 hours.

For the inquiry, cost of one hour of training — 20 000 roubles (approximately $667), a complete course — 667 800 roubles (approximately $22260).
