| This may appear to be a daft question but elsewhere on this site it states that "some" ATM's give you roubles. Can anyone tell me what currency ATM's give and if there are any in Kostroma. I would have expected any ATM to give the currency of the country it's in - not Russia? I know many tourists visit Kostroma, so I would assume it would have ATMs - no? Thnks for your help - it will be my first visit to Russia this April. Mike |

| The point is some ATM can't produce dollars, although all can produce rubles. |

All ATMs in Russia, Kostroma included, offer roubles. More often than in other countries, the limit per operation is very low. 20000 is the highest I know, at my own bank, in other ATMs it's 10000 at best, sometimes 5000.
Some ATMs offer, in addition to roubles, euros and/or dollars. |

| Thanks Gaijin - this may sound strange but my wife to be is adamant that the ATMs in Kostroma do not pay out in roubles. How can I convince her they do? Do you live in Kostroma? Mike |

gazprombank site->kostroma->private->cards->atm addresses
(i.e. /kostroma/private/plastic/atm/ ) and read the third column - 'rur+usd' or 'rur' only
I know, there are banks other than that, but at least sberbank doesn't mention currency on its site. |

I think Sberbank never offers dollars or euros. The limit on their ATMs is 10000. Why on Earth would ATMs in Russia offer only foreign currencies? What a strange idea, you cannot use foreign currencies here. It might have been the case during the meltdown of the russian economy (default) in the 90s, but I have been in Kostroma and can assure you that ATMs offer rubles.
Besides, in Kostroma you won't get as good exchange rates as in Moscow or Piter, so you'd better change your notes in the center of Moscow or Piter, or withdraw rubles in any ATM... |

| I quite agree - I thought that was the point of having ATMs - so you could get the currency that's being used in that country but somewhere on this site I read they didn't offer roubles and my fiance believes the same and she lives in Kostroma!!!! I will try and find the statement I'm refering to and post it here. Thanks for your help. Mike |

| I don't know about Kostroma, but in St Petersburg most ATM's will give you roubles, some can give you US dollars or Euro. |
