I've been searching online for Russian language schools, and found a site for this state institute on Volgin str., 6. Does anyone know about the quality of teaching and student dorms? - Regards, Franklin

Hi there,
I followed a 2 months course of Russian at Pushkins Institute.
It's incredible how much I learned, after 1 jear in Moscow I really had problems with the language. Now it's much better.
I've been told it's the best school to learn Russian in Moscow by other Europeans. I think the long trip to the school is worth (located in the south of Moscow, metro Kalushskaja).

Only problem I had there: one of my teachers was... impossible. The class asked the management to change her, but there was no reaction. In exchange our main teacher was brilliant.
So if you have troubles with a teacher it's better to change the class, instead of trying to complain.

What is good of their teaching system, is that teachers will be trying to speak only Russian to you.

The dorms are quite ok. A bit expensive if you wish to be by yourself. Renovation is good, furniture regular, a plus is the fridge.

Thank you for advising me on your experience there. I wondered about its low cost vis-a-vis the private schools, and the quality of instruction and accommodations.

It's more reassuring to have insider's views. Cheers.- Franklin

Ok, I thought I'd look on the net for something about good old pushkin - I had thought about it earlier - but these days a friend I met in Moscow came to visit and it brought me lots of memories.
Best thing about Pushkin: the people you meet there. You will have the chance to meet more people and know more about the world all over than any other way. I wish you the luck I had in finding unforgettable friends - most of which life will drive you appart from, but even so, you will never forget.
I don't know how old you are, but just in case you are still a green kiddy: take care. Many people I know couldn't stand the temptation absolute freedom, a crazy bunch of careless friends and relativelly cheap booze and other distractions represent. I don't want to scare you, but life there can be a continuous challenge to one's self-control.
Teachers are very good - they are actually the among the best - especially older ones. You know: the good old discipline in education. But although the dorm is one of the best in Moscow - if not THE best - if you really want to dedicate your time to studying, I recomend a flat in the city, or a rented room, or whatever but. Thing is there are very few Russians in the dorm and although you will have the chance to meet people from all over the world, you won't really get to practice your every - day Russian with native speakers. Unfortunatelly dorms for Russian students don't live up to Western or any other foreign standards, but they would be the best choice if you really want to learn the language and live among Russians.
I don't know what else to tell you. If you get to live there, beware from the "ohranniky" (guards at the entrance), I don't know how things are going now, I heard they have changed some, but the years I was there, they weren't really people you could trust.
But anyway, I get the impression I could scare you away from Pushkin and it's really not my intention. I am telling you it will be a memorable experience, maybe change your life and your way of seeing things. And Moscow is one of the top surreal places I've known yet.
So have fun and keep an eye open for that possible turning point in your life.
Ah, and don't forget Russia is a cold country. Go prepared, especially if you go in winter.
Ah, one more thing: if you get the chance to visit some places out of Moscow, I recomend the so called Zolotoye Koltso - you'll know when you get there. But also Kostroma, Yaroslav, Tveri and a couple of small, anonimous towns that will certainly charm you.

Hello,
Hey, thanks for your reply. I appreciate your feedback about Pushkin. It sounds like it's got a good program, but at 44, my age, I don't kow that dorm life would be the best option. I've been on cruise ships the last several years, which also offers a great way to meet people from all over. My shipmates come from 65 different countries. It is a special environment, I agree.

I will consider Pushkin and another school in Voronezh, which would probably allow me to meet more Russians and practice. The thing is, as you probably know, nobody wants to talk survival/caveman Russian with a beginner. It's ok for maybe the first 10 minutes, but it quickly fades...

It helps to get your feedback as I'm just getting the visa now and my choice is still open as to the school.
