Hi,

Myself and some friends want to drive from Moscow to Vladivostok. However, we dont have time to drive back! I have heard of people loading cars onto trains to get them to Moscow from Vladivostok. Do you know how we might do this?

Many thanks,

Tom

Dear Tom,
Google "freight forwarding" companies in vladivostock. Most of these companies deal with putting container traffic on and off the railways. I was last in that area over 14 years ago but I see "silver wind" website still working. My main contacts from those days are in Vostochny - not Vladivostock - which is 4 hours away and whilst they could undoubtably help, there's not much point as you need someone in Vladivostock to handle everything. You need to pay attention to visas as a tourist visa won't cut it for a trip this long. You also need to be sure about whether you want the car exported outside Russia or just delivered back to Moscow. Bear in mind a container back to Moscow might cost USD5k but with the credit crunch who knows maybe less.

hi les,

thanks for your reply. i have emailed a few of those companies that google threw up. perhaps some of your contacts in vostochny might know how to help in vladivostok? if not we could use them instead. 4 hrs isn't much if we've got that far! i would prefer to use someone tried and tested if possible.

$5000 sounds like a lot. there used to be a steady flow from vladivostok to moscow of japanese cars to be sold in moscow supposedly at a profit. there must be a cheaper way. any other ideas?

Tom,

1 I was last in vostochny in 1998 around 11 years ago.
2 I did get a company called VIFS to give me an idea of the cost of a 20' container back to moscow and I was told (in 2006) around USD5k
3 Now here is the bad news - I just checked and the bloke I knew just left VIFS in September 2008 - he was the CEO. Someone new there now. I used to work in VICS - container port operator.
4 Silver Wind in Vladivostock is the best bet IMHO.
