I will be visiting Russia, (St. Petersburg and Moscow) during the time of the Orthodox Easter. I would like to attend an Easter Service. Does anyone have any recomendations?

What kind of recomendations do you want? If you want to attend Easter Service and you understand Russian just go to ANY russian orthodox church or monastery while being in Russia and ask any priest or monk about it. What, when and where. If you want just to watch, come to any church in the Easter's morning. Services might be very long. If you don't, why bother?

P.S. Before entering into a church don't forget to take your hat off if you are a man or cover your hairs under a scarf or kershief if you are a woman.

Thank you so much for your reply. I had seen pictures of women with headscarves and was making a mental note to bring one with me.

I am a Christian, but not Orthodox. I don't speak Russian, but I would very much like to attend a service. Although I couldn't follow the sermon, I would enjoy the sights and sounds around me. I had read someplace that Easter services were at midnight? Is this correct?

In your opinion, if I were allowed to attend a service, would it be more interesting to be at one of the main churches in Moscow or Petersburg, or at perhaps at one of the smaller churches in the Golden Ring?

I cannot help here. Sorry. I'm not muscovite so I can't say any pros or cons.

Good afternoon, nquandt.

In each church there will be an Easter service. One of the main things in Moscow - the Temple of the Christ of the Savior (Храм Христа Спасителя) on the st. "Kropotkinsky" (ст. "Кропоткинская").

Easter services were at midnight?

It is "Religious procession".

But in all churches and cathedrals there will be many people, and in the main things it is much more.
