|
|
I live in Japan. For years now, I've been planning a trip from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg which I hope to do this autumn. My tentative schedule will take ten weeks, so the basic 30-day tourist visa will not suffice.
Both LP and the Thomas handbook recommend appying for a business visa if one plans to travel Russia longer than 30 days. But several Russia travel consultants here in Japan have warned me that I risk detainment if I choose to travel in Russia on a business visa, yet actually have no business to do there.
Can anyone share some experienced opinions or expert advise? Is there a risk invovled with long-term travel in Russia on a business visa, without any business involved? If there is little to no risk, why am I being told there is by travel consultants?
Any information is greatly appreciated! |

Hello there!
As well as answering thes question already posted here can you also please answer the following:
- I have seen on the FAQs that proof of flights/tains etc are not needed for a tourist visa...
1) Is this also the case for a business visa?
2) You say we don't need to be doing business in order to use a business visa but then you say in order to register upon arrival for a business vis a then our organisation who we are working with can do this for us!!!??? And if we are not working for anyone??
Can I simply go to the Moscow registratory office myself, alone, upon arrival in Moscow before getting on the Transsiberian railway?
3) Will they not be suspect if I have a business visa but the organisation I am working for is not registering for me?
Many thanks indeed!! ....I look forward to your comments

hi!
I got a multiple-entry business visa for 12 months from this site. With this visa I've been 4 times to Russia (short stays only) and I had really no problem at all!
you don't need to make business in Russia (I don't!) to have a business visa!
Look at other topics about registration : the landlord where you stay is responsible to registrate you, not yourself! So if you stay in hotels, no problem, they will do it for you. |

Many thanks for your reply! )
But I shall be staying with friends from couchsurfing.com
....therefor, will it still be ok if they do it for me...the registering....even if they are just RENTING in their flat?? Or would they need to ask their Landlord (owner of the flat) to do so??
And would this e the same process for Kamchatka?? nothing special required there?
Many thanks! Have a nice day!

Yeah don't worry about the business part.
There is a part of Kamtchatka that requires an authorization, there was a thread recently about this. It's a limited part.
In Peter and Moscow there are many agencies taking care of the registration. There might be such agencies in other cities. But registration is necessary only if you spend 3 business days in the same city anyway. Keep your tickets to show you're not staying that long.
And if you are staying more, and there are no registration agency where you are...well, you have several options:
-hope you won't get controlled by the cops. If you're white, you should be fine. If you are controlled after the 3 day delay, you'll have to pay a fine. It used to be 500 rubles but I think it's 1500 now, not sure.
-get the landlord to register you (unlikely in most cases)
-get the cheapest hotel in town to register you from the 3rd business day of your stay in the town until the day of your departure.
-buy a train ticket from another town, not to far, towards to town where you are staying long with a date on the 4th business day of your stay. That shortens your apparent stay by 3 business days. |

Hi again! Many thanks for your speedy responses!
...the thing is, is that i shall be arriving in Moscow and then travelling with the transsiberian railway to Vladivostok (then to Kamchatka)....therefore i will NOT be staying with anyone before until about 6 days after arriving in Russia!!....and registration needs to be before 3 days....so - i presume in this case i will register by myself in person before getting on the transsiberian railway??? correct?....and if so....will that be certain not to cause problems of being on my own to register, not doing business and having a business visa???
OR do i need to get a friend in moscow to help me?
Many many thanks! )) |
