Well, what if those films we talk about are a bit Russian in spirit? Very Happy

OK. Russian ones.
If you can find it you should see 'Peter I', 'Alexandr Nevsky', 'Suvorov', 'Korabli shturmuyut bastiony'. All those are old, B/W, 'Stalin's' films but they are still great!
If you'll learn to filter out communist propaganda and enjoy the film itself - its gorgeous!

The later 2 can only be found on VHS, at Gorbushka. Probably ordered on the NET. It's all about days of Russian glory - war, building of a powerful state, heroism etc. Great actors! Nice filming! You wont need any special effects at all. This is real stuff.

Later ones.
1. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I bought myself every film of the series.
Sometimes Livanov and Solomin seem to be making fun of their own caracters, dont you think? Smile 'Baskerwill hound' - is the best in the series, IMHO. A lot of fun (sure its spooky too) Smile. And the music!!! You wont forget it ever!
BTW the films were digitally processed and restored recently as well as some others.

2. Kin-dza-dza.
Really great but not eazy to understand. One has to experience some kind of oppression to get it in full.
Colored pants signifying social position of a person - is quite a find. Smile

3. 'Zdravsvuyte Ya Vasha Tetya' - very funny stuff. About a street bum who was forced to cross-dress and peform as an excentric Brazilian woman, a millioner. Hilarious!

The last one is actually a screen version of the play by Brandon Thomas, an English playwright, called "Charley's Aunt". Does not diminish the achivement of Kalyagin in that movie though Smile Great stuff!

As for Kin-dza-dza, that's just classic

"I would not be able to live in a society, which does not have the colour of the pants differentiation"

My great Russian claim to fame (sic) was dubbing a voice in the first "Brat." I had nothing to do with the second one, though, and I'm rather glad:).

I can't say I'm really into the recent trend in popular Russian cinema toward "anti-heroes" and violence in general. I think comedies are what Russian filmmakers do best, and there have recently been a few I really liked but somehow weren't publicized much:

"Privet, Duralei!" (a Ryazanov film, but no one seems to have heard of it)

"Sirota Kazanskaya" (a cute New Year's story that's even worth enduring an hour and a half of Nikolai Fomenko)

"Khochu v Tyurmu" (filmed mostly in Amsterdam, where everyone on the street speaks English instead of Dutch for some reason)

I don't think they have, but then again remakes are almost never as good.
The only good remake (even non-foreign) i can think of is Ocean's 11.

I thought the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo was better than the original.

I absolutely loved Kukuska. I found it to be very funny and sweet. I loved all of the three characters. The woman especially was quite a character. I own the DVD and have watched it 3 or 4 times now. I found it rather to be uplifting especially with regard to war and how when we get down to the nitty gritty as individuals, we can understand each other even when we don't speak the same language.

Surprised noone mentioned Sobach'e Serdtse (heart of a dog).

Latest TV adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Idiot was excellent too, imo.

Did anyone notice that Russians are the like the fifth or fourth most frequently used villains in Hollywood movies, after Nazis, real estate agents, fundamentalists and alcocholic fathers?

Do you guys get maybe a little offended by all those Tom Clancy adaptations and James Bond movies? Doesn't anyone ever walk out of stuff like "The Peacemaker" or "Air Force One" ?

James Bond villains (not just Russians, all of them) were all so caricaturistic, exaggerated, spoke Russian with an awful accent (at least in early James Bond), did things Russians would never do, say things Russians would never say...it was really hard to take them seriously.

As for Clancy and that ridiculous "Peacemaker" stuff... well I say let the Hollywood have their toys. After all, in "Brother 2" America was portrayed as full of drug dealers, money grabbing mafiosos and just plain idiots (with one or two exceptions). Smile

I thought they missed a golden opportunity in "Eurotrip" by not having the kids go to Russia on the way to Berlin.Though there was that hilarious scene in Bratislawa and a reference to Slovakian orange juice commercials.

Does anyone know "Cheloveck s kinoapparatom"? As of last night, that's the last Russian movie I have seen.

It's a 1928 black and white, experimental, Soviet silent documentary. Like "Battleship Potemkin", it's crude Marxist propaganda but technically brilliant, visually inventive and inovative, a huge leap forward in cinematic art, I think. Basically, the film shows a camera man filming a communist city from dawn till dusk and all the happy, happy people in it while an editor edits the footage. The movie probably used every available visual trick at the time and invented a few more. For my money, "Man With A Movie Camera" is more dazzling and stunning to look than anything in all three "Lord of The Rings".

Thanks for all of your suggestions for favorite Russian Films. Today I found a really good video/DVD store with a wide selection of foreign films including Russian. I did not at the time remember all of your suggestions, but I got 3 free rentals for joining. So I am going to watch over the next week-
Anna, WHICH IS A DOCUMENTARY OF A RUSSIAN CHILD;
Andrei Rubley by Tartovsky, who has his own section in this store;
and
Moscow Does not Believe in Tears, because I am a die hard Romantic!

Stay tuned for more....

I?ve heard that "The Alchemist", Coelho?s master piece, is about to be filmed in the US. Never thought that would happen but now I am looking forward to it.
And that seems to be the inner motivation thanks to which the nearly impossible can be achieved:

Manual for climbing mountains

A] Choose the mountain you want to climb: don’t pay attention to what other people say, such as “that one’s more beautiful” or “this one’s easier”. You’ll be spending lots of energy and enthusiasm to reach your objective, so you’re the only one responsible and you should be sure of what you’re doing.
B] Know how to get close to it: mountains are often seen from far off – beautiful, interesting, full of challenges. But what happens when we try to draw closer? Roads run all around them, flowers grow between you and your objective, what seemed so clear on the map is tough in real life. So try all the paths and all the tracks until eventually one day you’re standing in front of the top that you yearn to reach.
C] Learn from someone who has already been up there: no matter how unique you feel, there is always someone who has had the same dream before you and ended up leaving marks that can make your journey easier; places to hang the rope, trails, broken branches to make the walking easier. The climb is yours, so is the responsibility, but don’t forget that the experience of others can help a lot.
D] When seen up close, dangers are controllable: when you begin to climb the mountain of your dreams, pay attention to the surroundings. There are cliffs, of course. There are almost imperceptible cracks in the mountain rock. There are stones so polished by storms that they have become as slippery as ice. But if you know where you are placing each footstep, you will notice the traps and how to get around them.
E] The landscape changes, so enjoy it: of course, you have to have an objective in mind – to reach the top. But as you are going up, more things can be seen, and it’s no bother to stop now and again and enjoy the panorama around you. At every meter conquered, you can see a little further, so use this to discover things that you still had not noticed.
F] Respect your body: you can only climb a mountain if you give your body the attention it deserves. You have all the time that life grants you, as long as you walk without demanding what can’t be granted. If you go too fast you will grow tired and give up half way there. If you go too slow, night will fall and you will be lost. Enjoy the scenery, take delight in the cool spring water and the fruit that nature generously offers you, but keep on walking.
G] Respect your soul: don’t keep repeating “I’m going to make it”. Your soul already knows that, what it needs is to use the long journey to be able to grow, stretch along the horizon, touch the sky. An obsession does not help you at all to reach your objective, and even ends up taking the pleasure out of the climb. But pay attention: also, don’t keep saying “it’s harder than I thought”, because that will make you lose your inner strength.
H] Be prepared to climb one kilometer more: the way up to the top of the mountain is always longer than you think. Don’t fool yourself, the moment will arrive when what seemed so near is still very far. But since you were prepared to go beyond, this is not really a problem.
I] Be happy when you reach the top: cry, clap your hands, shout to the four winds that you did it, let the wind - the wind is always blowing up there - purify your mind, refresh your tired and sweaty feet, open your eyes, clean the dust from your heart. It feels so good, what was just a dream before, a distant vision, is now part of your life, you did it!
J] Make a promise: now that you have discovered a force that you were not even aware of, tell yourself that from now on you will use this force for the rest of your days. Preferably, also promise to discover another mountain, and set off on another adventure.
L] Tell your story: yes, tell your story! Give your example. Tell everyone that it’s possible, and other people will then have the courage to face their own mountains.

Oh, well,
and my vote of a favorite Russian film is certainly the old version with Ingrid Bergmann of ANNA KARENINA. You might say this is not a truely Russian film, because it has been produced in Germany but to me it reflects the flavor of Russia that I am familiar with. Eventually this is just a fiction of mine about Russia but until I have not been there I will not know any better Smile

Cheers to everybody,

That's not Ingrid Bergman, that's Greta Garbo! Razz Ingrid Bergman played a different Russian woman in "Antastasia".
