Where can one stay in Kazan for a reasonable price and near the center of city. Maybe the more important question, how does one make a reservation?

I have looked around and found only the Safar and the Tatarstan and a couple other small places that seem booked already for October.

Can anyone offer advise on a nice/reasonable place to stay and how I can reserve the hotel?

Thanks!

On our tour crossing russia, most of us stayed at Safar, camping there while a few took some over expensive rooms (250$ a night). I of course would only recommend to stay there if you have an unlimited budget and are curious about soviet times stone faced hotel staff.

2 of us went to tatarstan hotel. The location is very convenient, since most of those in Safar wandered around the main street next to tatarstan the 2 whole days we stayed there. Once again the price (60$ a night) was insane compared to the quality of the room : just the space for 2 beds, we had to use some humid toilet paper to seal the wire of the shower so that we could have a shower. No bath, when you have your shower you wet the whole room. No room service (beds not done) on the second day, even tho the laidy "securing" the floor was staying 5 meters away from the room.

We had our room booked by our russian speaking guide, so the 60$ is not just a foreigner price (anyways, russians are almost foreign there since tatarstan claimed for independance in the 90s)

Usually the logic about hotels in Russia is first come first served. But some hotels do accept pre bookings. You have to pay 25% for the booking. Sometimes you can only book through travel agencies.

I remember several other accomodation options indicated in the Lonely Planet guide, one near the train station. But at the time we were there (end of June), they had no availability.

Anyways, as a tourist, Kazan has very few to offer. You can t even visit the Kremlin there. Unless you get there for business, it s hardly worth the visit and the money spent.

Many thanks for the insight on Kazan. I have been lucky enough to meet somebody who is from there and knows the city inside and out. Truth be told I am going to meet a Russian woman who I have corresponded with for some time. Otherwise, I don't think Kazan would be on my tourist destination list. Any tips for making the best of the time while we are there?
