Can anybody tell me if it is possible (or relatively easy!) to get off the train at Irkutsk, travel to Olkhon Island for a few days and get from there to Ulan Ude to meet up with the Trans-Siberian again?
Just thought it would be nice to see a different area instead of doubling back to Irkutsk again to get the train.
Thanks! |

Hi!
It is quite possible to make this trip. From Irkutsk you can drive with the regular bus to Olkhon island, spend a few days at Olkhon, than return to Irkutsk (arrive Irkutsk at 16:00 usually) and take a train to Ulan-Ude (there are some trains to Ulan-Ude every days). |

| Человек-то хочет как раз, не возвращаясь в Иркутск, махнуть на тот берег, в Бурятию. Специалисты, разъясните. |

| Baikalist, you missed the question : is there a way to go from the island to Ulan Ude, NOT going via Irkutsk? |

I don't have a detailed answer, but there are several towns on the east shore, and probably several of them offer a solution. There is no doubt that all these towns have bus routes to Ulan Ude.
There are boat routes from Ust Barguzin, don't have any details about them, but I wouldn't worry, you can make that trip. If you know how long you'll take from Irkutsk to the island, plan at least the same from the island to Ulan Ude, with a few hours on top (although it might be shorter, distance is shorter). After all you want to enjoy it and I don't suppose you're in a rush. 2 or 3 nights in that region would be great, I envy you.
Here you'll see the island, the town of Ust-Barguzin on the east, and most of the road going to Ulan Ude, which is just south out of the map if you're not in full screen mode.
