I wasn't sure where else to post this, but I think this part should be okay. I'm sort of in a bad situation.
I'm Russian American, I don't have Russian citizenship anymore (I'd like to change that someday) and only have an American passport. My fiance is Russian and I moved to Russia a year ago, but moved a few months later due to some problems. While we were in Russia we couldn't get married fast enough before I left. At the time I had a visa made by an invitation.
I was told it's absolutely impossible for an American citizen to get a invitation more than once a year. Is that true? (We're sort of in a bad situation with his Mum, she doesn't want us to go to Russia, so she could change that.) She also told it's impossible for an American citizen to enter more than one time a year. I don't mean multiple visas though. Of course it would be different if they were a family members (spouse).
Also, we can't go back now due to the Army situation, so we have to get married where we are now. (Which is the United Arab Emirates.) I wanted to know if anyone knew of a possible way to get married when both of you are out of the country your passport is? The American embassy told us if we get married here locally we just get the papers signed by a few people and then take it to the embassy and they'll approve it as a normal, legal marriage. But we were told (by his Mum) that's impossible at the Russian embassy.
Does anyone have any information on this subject? Or know anything that could possibly help?
Thanks! |

I'm not sure I understood exactly everything you wanted to say, but I will try to help you.
First, this rule that you're talking about that an American can't get more than one invitation per year is not true. You can get as many invitations and visas you want. Perhaps, you were always getting private invitations, and that's why you had to go through all the fuss and ask you fiance's mum to take care of that. You can actually simply get a multiple-entry 12-month business visa and forget about all the visa/invitation problems completely. The only thing with this visa is that you need to register it upon arrival (if you do it through a good agency, they'll do it for you), and you can't stay longer than 6 consecutive months on this visa in Russia, so what most people do is that they leave for a weekend to some Baltic states country (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), and then come back to Russia.
When you come to Russia on this visa, you will be able to marry, it doesn't matter what type of visa you have. You need to go to ZAGS #4 in Moscow (near Savyolovskaya metro), see more information at http://waytorussia.net/Practicalities/Marriage.html
The whole procedure will take you approximately 50-60 days.
But actually, if you want to marry because you think it will make it easier for you to come to Russia, it's not true. It will not be easier at all, and your spouse will have to make a private invitation for you all the time, which is a lengthy process, takes a lot of time in queues, and the visa you get is extremely not flexible (only single-entry and 1 month).
However, if you want to marry so that your spouse is able to come to USA, then it might help.
If the Army situation you're referring to is the draft, keep in mind that it starts on 1 October and lasts until 31 December and then 1 April to 30 June, so if you come anytime before / after this period, there's no danger to be taken in the army.
I don't know about marrying in Saudi Arabia, sorry. |
