I received a private invitation to tour in Russia with some friends. I live in NYC. I have appointment tomorrow to go to Russian Consulate. Do you they hold on to my US passport before giving me a visa?? My friend told me they hold on to your passport and then let you know when to return to pick up visa. Is it safe to leave at the Consulate?

They will take your passport for processing and then give it back, hopefully with a visa stuck inside somewhere. That is standard.
