I have read many of the articles on here regarding importing a car to Russia, however they are mostly at least 4-5 years old. Has the situation of importing a car into Russia become any simpler?

My Situation: In May next year we are planning a drive across to Lake Baikal area via Mongolia in a 1991 Land Rover Disco (bought for £1300). The drive is in order to raise money for charity and we also hope to donate the vehicle (and it's contents - mainly camping gear, spare parts etc.) to a children's home or other Russian charitable organisation out there.

How would I go about doing this, and what kind of costs would be involved?

Also, if anybody has any suggestions of such a charitable organisation in the Baikal area who might be interested in this vehicle, I would be very interested to hear your ideas Very Happy

I am also interested in this. I am planing to drive from Vladivostok to Spain next year in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler, pulling a small camp trailer. What I was told is if you bring in a car, you have to drive it out. If I sold it in Russia, I would be require to pay a very expensive import fee. I would imagine it would be the same if you donated the car. I will continue to monitor this post to hopefully learn more about the procedure.

I suspect that you might well have to import the car and pay duty and then donate it. Importing, registering and then selling / donating a car would be quite a paper trail and time and effort in Russia. This is my opinion and not based on first hand fact. I've not done this myself but keep pretty close to the toings anf froings on Russia and getting cars into it for holidaying purposes.
My only suggestion is to contact the organisers of the "Mongol" Rally which goes from the UK to Mongolia... surprise surpirise! They might be able to point you in the right direction as obviously not all the cars make it to Mongolia or back again!
That's your best bet for information.
Les
