Hi all,
Still planning drive to Russia and Mongolia next year, shipping car home to UK from Vladivostock hopefully (providing I find a shipping company that will ship to Europe Rolling Eyes )

On the more negative side, I have to ask - what if it all goes wrong, and the car is damaged/is beyond repair? What are the implications of writing off/scrapping a car in Russia and getting out of the country without it??

Mike

If there was an accident, then there would have to be a police report assigning blame. Then there would have to be an insurance assessment stating that the car was a write off beyond economic repair. Photographic evidence would be nice too. When I claimed in 2005 on a Russian insurance policy the damage assessor took photographs. I haven't ever done the above *not taken a car out that I brought in) and above is merely my guess as to what is required to satisfy the customs. If the vehicle had zero economic value then the customs could hardly charge you duty to import it and the paperwork wouldn't be worth the effort. Alternatively there would have to be some financial incentive for the customs officers.
