Hello Webmaster

I am Boris from Chile and Im planning a trip to Russia. I want to visit Siberia also but after I read about Barnaul and Irkutsk, Im not so sure where should I go because I cannot afford visiting both cities. Which place do you recommend for visiting Barnaul or Irkutsk?. What`s on Barnaul that I cannot find in Irkutsk and what´s on Irkutsk not possible to be found in Barnaul?

I would appreciate your suggestion very much

thank you and good luck

If you're talking about the cities only, then Barnaul is more interesting for those, who are looking for a taste of Siberian night life (which is quite peculiar) or just to have a few pleasant evenings out. Irkutsk is much less attractive and more expensive in this sense.

However, Baikal lake is just half an hour from Irkutsk and Altay mountains are a few hours drive from Barnaul, and Baikal is something more unique, so if you're interested in nature, you could go to Irkutsk better. Also, it would be easier to meet other travelers there.

Hi Boris

I ve only been to Irkutsk, but this was 9 years ago when I did the transmongolian (I definitely have to get back one day to do the Transsib as well)

What I can say is that I enjoyed my time and Baikal is definitely a place that is unique on this Planet ..... And as for me, when I don't live in a place for more than a week, I don't care if for my nightlife I have a choice among 2 or 20 places Smile locals will always show you the way to the place to be Smile

but this is of course my personal opinion.

cheers

Marco
