Hi,
A very detailed guide to Russian visa can be found at http://www.waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/
Just in a few words, your wife can make a private invitation for you. She needs to go to her local OVIR (she knows what it is), queue there for a few hours, get an application form and OVIR's bank details, fill it out, make a payment (I think it's about $10 in all), and then, after another 2-hour queuing submit it all to OVIR.
It will then take about 1 month for OVIR to process the application and they might issue the private invitation, which your wife will need to send in original to you. The maximum period of your stay with such invitation is 3 months and the visa will be single-entry only.
When you arrive to Russia, you will need to register your visa, and then you can apply for a permit of stay. The permit of stay is not granted to everybody, because you need to gather many different documents (such as agreement of everybody who's registered in your wife's apartment that you'll live there, proof that your wife owns the apartment, etc.). If you get the permit of stay, you will have an extension to your visa, but you will always need to apply 1 MONTH before you want to leave Russia (that's a bit tricky if you want to leave urgently for some reason).
After 5 years of living in Russia you can apply for Russian nationality.
An easier way is to get a multiple-entry business visa. All you need to do is to fill out an application form on one of the numerous websites that provide business visa support (invitation letters), and it will be ready in 7-20 days (depending on which kind you choose and how much you pay). You can then apply for a long term visa to Russia, but your visits will "officially" be for business purposes. You will be able to have a multiple-entry 12-month Russian visa, but the maximum period you will be able to stay in Russia will be 6 months. It's quite easy, because you can just go for a holiday with your family to some country, such as Ukraine or Turkey or Baltic states, and then come back.
Most of the foreigners, who need to live in Russia and have families do exactly that: they get a 12-month business visa and do a "visa-run" each year to one of the Baltic states (or back home) to renew it. They get the invitation beforehand in Russia, so that they can apply directly for a new visa. |
