My wife and I are currently 8 months into a world cycle tour, you can see it here: http://www.goingslowly.com/
We are planning to arrive in Moscow by bicycle in early June, 2010. This is what we'd like to do:
1. Purchase a 4x4 in Moscow.
2. Place our bikes in the bed of the truck and drive to Ulan Bator.
3. Sell or give the truck away upon arrival.
4. Complete our trip via bicycle to Malaysia ending in Kuala Lumpur.
I have a distant relative in Moscow who can assist in purchasing a vehicle. That said, how feasible is this? Can a foreigner purchase/drive a car in Russia? Are there any major safety concerns we should be considering?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide, we're in the very early stages of planning here.

What you describe can be done but would take time and paperwork. The main problem is that you are a foreigner and not a russian. I think borrowing someone's car - then letting them drive it back to Moscow - is the best solution. Getting a car bought and registered to a foriegner would take time and money. Then selling it in UB would probably mean exporting it from Russia to UB (Mongolia?) and then selling it. The paperwork will kill you (both). if you "borrow" someone's car, mainly you need a doverenost which is your authorisation to use the car. Then you need insurance (easy) and an international driving permit to back up your driving license. If you are American, then I believe the yanks don't really do IDP's unlike the europeans. The main problem is to convince someone to let you drive their car to UB. Pay for their flights to UB and costs of repatriating the car and depreciation and it should be okay. I would also speak to the organisers of the Mongol Rally (for cars) which is run out of London. They may have more specific experience relating to UB, cars and so on. My expertise mainly deals with going on holiday to Russia from Europe in a car.

What about having a Russian resident I know purchase the car under their name for me? We're willing to drive a junker and leave it at the other end. Maybe they'd want to come pick it up but I feel doubtful. Would there be any concerns with just abandoning the vehicle in UB, keys in the ignition?
Also, can you speak to what the roads are like between Moscow and UB? Could we get by with a car rather than a 4x4?
Thanks! |

| Ya they are definitely safety tips I suggest you first to visit a doctor whether it is good to go so far on bicycle and then whether you both can cycle that much far and try to avoid lots of luggage. |

DITTRICH--
Thank you for the advice on contacting the Mongol Rally. I was able to speak with Rob who confirmed the roads are good from Moscow to UB. Now all we need to do is get ourselves a vehicle!

My wife and I have cycled over 9,000km in the last nine months; each with bicycles weighing in excess of 100lbs. We're definitely prepared for this sort of thing |

Hi! Can not buy the car, and lease together with the driver? I can offer the services. On a choice two cars: LR Defender-110 or IFA-W50. Think, it can will easier, more reliably and more cheaply.

DEF 110--
We're not interested in going with a guide but if you have any suggestions on how to purchase a vehicle, I'd love to hear them!

Actually. there might be lot of troubles buying car in Russia as not resident.
Papers in Russian and so on can lost several days, easier to book a car.
hertz rather expensive. may deal brokers as Bookinggroup or similar |

We wound up buying a car in Germany. It was very easy:

Getting into Russia as a US citizen with a German car was more or less a non-issue:

Hopefully anyone reading this thread in the years to come will find this of use! We're posting this from a tent, next to our car, in Siberia |
