Hello - My girlfriend and I will be in Moscow on Christmas (25 December). Any suggestions for how to celebrate ? She's fluent in Russian and lived in Moscow for 5 years (so she knows her way around). I don't speak much Russian.

We're interested in everything - religious services, food, celebrations.

What ideas do you have ?

Thanks and cheers.

Russian Christmas is on January 7. It's pretty much a non-event.

Their big holiday with the gift giving and Ded Moroz is New Year. Moscow shuts down about dark and everybody goes home. No beer kiosks, no cafes, no commerce, no nothing, it's a family home holiday.

So on New Years you want to be sure to have a stock of munchies and drinks and cigarettes in advance because unlike the usual 24 hour glitz and bang of Moscow life, on New Year's there is nothing open--nothing.

Some of the expat hangouts will have the red suited Santa and traditional western Christmas trappings--the Starlite Diner, Silver's for December 25, but the Russians, no.
