Hi Everybody
I can't find any info so I thought I would try here. I would like to visit Moscow and the Golden Ring in the fall late sept. early Oct. But my bosse's sons assistant Milla told me that I would have a hard time because it's ok for a guy Amercian tourist to be chubby/fat but it's not o.k for chubby girls she said stangers like russian grandmas will make fun of me I'm 5"7 and size 14/16 I know that I won't be shopping for
clothes and don't care about night clubs and their face control. Is she just messing with me or do I need to hit the gym ASAP. I'm a very timid person and I will be going with a tour group I understand russian better than I speak it but I don't want to get teased by stangers.
any advice would be helpful
thanks,

Don't worry about it. Go to Russia and see all the nice places. If you are 5'7" and size 14 then you are not too overweight. Wear mostly black and heels. That will slim your look. |

You are welcome. Really, on that level, you should not worry what others think. |

Which of your experiences in Russia do you base this advice on jojo?
I certainly wouldn't take it. The poor girl would look like she was off to a funeral every time she went out. |

I did not know that my advice was for Russia alone. My experience in fashion does not pertain to Russia. A person does not have to be experience in travel to understand fashion. I don't think she will mind looking like she is going to a funeral if she looks thinner. |

Just an update, don't wear stripes going up or around, avoid that. No huge floral prints, small prints is okay, avoid white or real light colors. Like I said all black and if you don't like all black, make sure your skirt or pants on the bottom is all black. If you wear jeans, wear darker ones with a black blouse or top. If you want to mix a different blouse where one with a black background with any color in it as a pattern. No peasant blouses, they look like maternity tops.
Also, look into this item called, "Spanx". It is really popular even with thinner women, men are starting to wear it too. This just smooths your body. It is worn under your clothes. Stores like Lane Bryant, Kohls, Macy's has this item...nice and not too expensive.
Last don't worry what others think...twice told, tales not. |

| And, whatever you do, under no circumstances should you wear a clown suit. That really sends the wrong message to Russians. |

Yet the question was asked specifically about an upcoming visit to Russia!

And if you ever manage to get your fat arse out of the USA you will find that a bit of travel experience will be invaluable in broadening your understanding (fashion included), in miraculous way. Unless you are one of those tourists who whinge because they can't find a Walmart or Maccas on every corner of course. Every country has some of those.
Do us all a favour please and shut the fuck up, untill you actually go somewhere and can speak authoritatively on the subject. |

Sometimes, I wonder where your class comes from. What does your opinion have to do with this girls question on trying to look slimmer when she travels to Russia? Stop deviating.
I don't have a "fat arse" not even near having a fat "arse". I could not careless if there is a Wal-mart on every corner or the store "Maccas", never heard of that one. I have gone to several places last summer so maybe you should be quiet, (I can say that without using curse words) and as of matter of fact, I am moving out of the US soon to the tropics to work.
BTW, my fashion skills are of the highest level and don't need you to devalue my knowledge of it. I sure would love to see your closet. I imagine there are several "on the barbie" hats in there and tons of khakis that make a person cringe. |

Dear Booberry,
I hope you don't worry about the bickering between these long-time contributors to the forum ... usually it is more civil.
My personal observation is that most women in Russia are slimmer than their US counterparts. Like people everywhere, Russians come in many shapes and sizes. That being said, when I am on the streets, riding buses, etc., it is very rare to see a young woman I would think of as chubby.
I hope you won't worry about this, I don't expect it will make any difference to your trip! You won't look like a typical Russian ... but neither will anyone else in your group, Russians can usually 'peg' an American within a few seconds, even from 100 feet away!
You might want to "hit the gym," not to change your look, but because the best way to enjoy many of the places you will visit, will be by plenty of walking! So being fit enough that you can comfortably walk several miles each day, can add a lot to your enjoyment.
When you are in Russia, I hope that you will relax, and enjoy the experience deeply. I love to be there! |

Hi Booberry
I'm sure you will have a fabulous time. Generally, you will be too enthralled by the siteseeing to worry about such trifles. More often than not, you will also see a lot of large Westerners exploring the same places you are.
You will also probably make some good friends in your tour group which will make you think less about body image. Tour group members look out for each other.
In fact, you whole trip should be an exhilirating rush. You won't have time to worry about "does my somthingorother look big in this?". You'll want to squeeze in as much siteseeing and Russian culture as possible.
You'll probably do more walking than you're used to aswell. All in all, you'll probably return home a little sleeker (as well as with wonderful stories to tell). |

| At one of the metro stations, I saw this huge Nigerian lady. She had to be over 6 feet tall, had a bright blue outfit on, a gold head wrap, and blonde hair coming out of the wrap down to her bottom. |
