Hello,
My younger cousin is about 25ish and he is thinking about traveling to Moscow for a holiday. He is Eurasian, half Greek and half Thai I think, will he be racially targeted? I know he isn't going to go gallivanting the streets in night or do something dangerous, but do you think he will be okay? I a bit concerned for him.
Thanks,
Eurasian43

I don't think it's going to be a big problem for him. From how you described him, seems like he'll look very foreign in Russia and normally Russians have respect for foreigners. The racism exists, for sure, and is mainly directed towards people from Caucasus. But it's also not as much as the media portrays.

I would advise him to just feel safe and in case of any problems speak English – this should usually resolve any potential issues. As I said, English-speaking people get more help than anything else.

Dear Eurasian,

While some stories you probably heard could be real in 90s, Moscow in 2010 is not more dangerous than New York or London.
As long as you cousin stays out of trouble (or in other words do not look for trouble and do not go to some questionable places) he'll be safe.

Probably because second language classes are compulsory in school and university, and most people choose to study English, not to mention Hollywood films, so in most cases people will be able to help you at least in some way.
