Hello,
I just came back from Russia and wanted to say that I never bothered registering me visa, I simply carried a photocopy of me passport around so when the cops asked (and they only did once in moscow) I gave them the photocopy and said everything else is back at the hotel. Simple and it saved me 30$.
On the train out, no problems neither, the border guards don't care if you registered or not.
Just my 2 cents.

Cool. I'll put a link to your post in our Russian Visa section, so people are not too afraid about it.

I would be careful about that. The trick of carrying a photcopy of the passport with you is fine, but it is a bad idea to not register your visa. That's because the registration stamps are supposed to be checked at the airport.

Today, you say they aren't checking the registration stamps. But they are also increasing airport security, including psychological profiling of passengers. And they may very well begin looking more closely at registration stamps as part of the upgraded airport security.

It's so easy to get a registration stamp that I don't understand why you would try to get away with no stamps at all. Just pay for a hotel room and ask them to stamp it while you wait. Then, if you don't need the room, walk away. It's done.
