Haven't been to Russia in a few years. On of the things I like about Russia the most is you could walk down the street and drink beer or what ever and no one bothered you. I heard a while back that they were going to crack down on that. Curious if they ever did ? Please let me know. David

Unfortunately that practice is disappearing, thanks to regulation.

It was one of my pleasures too, walking on those long warm summer evenings with a coldie in hand. Summer cafes are plentiful though, not quite the same thing but still good.

Thanks. I can handle it at the outdoor cafes. On my previous trips I enjoyed walking from kiosk to kiosk drinking beers. Guess I will have to fly low and avoid the radar...David

There is a law that prohibits drinking alcoholic drinks in public. However, the punishment for breaking is negligible and nobody cares. There is a proverb: "The idiocy of Russian laws is compensated by the optionality of execution".

Can't say about other cities, but that's how it goes here, in Murmansk. Yes, if the police catches you drinking vodka in the street, - this will (almost definitely) costs you some fee (well, don't know, about 500-1000 roubles for russian man and who knows how much they would take from foreigner) and some hours in the police station, probably. But that's only about vodka and other 'strong' drinks. What about beer or a can of gin-tonic? Nobody cares :)
And, btw, Murmansk is a city that worth to visit, seriously. If you don't afraid some cold :)

Have you ever seen it personally? I haven't. Neither for vodka nor for beer, although I haven't seen people drinking vodka on the streets.

An advice for a foreigner. Drinking from a bottle in a paper packet will immediately draw an attention, as this is not typical behaviour. Anyway, if they approach you can simply throw it out and say that it is not yours. They simply won't be able to provide a proof of your "crime".

Damn, yeah! One of my fellows spent about six hours...
