What happened to this website ? I used to get good Russian travel advice here all the time. I have 3 posts on this site now with about 30 views each and not one response. Have to admit I have not been on it a while. David

David:

This site seems to be declining. It needs a lot more administrator attention, than it currently receives. That being said, there are a few folks who log in pretty regularly, and do their best to respond to questions.

I didn't answer, because:

A. Though I've been to Domodedovo a few times -- a very nice modern facility, and the hub for S7 (aka Sibir), I don't know what it's like at night. I'll try a search on this, however.

B. I'm not much of a drinker, and never drink on the street. I do a lot of walking on Russian streets, however, and I don't remember noticing anybody with a beer bottle or can in their hands -- but I haven't been on the lookout for this. For that matter, I rarely see people drinking anything (water, soda, what have you) on the streets.

C. Unfortunately, I haven't really branched out, having spent my time in just 3 towns. I would love to see much more of the world's largest country, but I have yet to see Kazan.

If I knew more, I would tell it!

I spent alot of time in Moscow and Volgograd. Lived by some 24's in both places and saw alot of people walking down the street with 2 liter bottles of beer walking down the street. Used to see students by one of the schools in Volgograd stand around and pass bottles on a frequent basis. From another post I just read looks like they are cracking down. Good to know about DME. Looks like I will be making a flight on S7. Thanks for all the advice....David

DME is a very civilized modern international airport. Cafes, bars, and concessions are open all hours.

However leaving DME to get a room for a 10 hour layover is probably not very practical.

DME is way on the outskirts of Moscow and there isn't much around. The commuter train into Moscow does not run between something like midnight and 6 AM. To get to/from DME during those hours you'd have to flag a car into town, and that's an expensive trip.

And as is internationally recognized, Moscow has some of the highest room rates in the world. You could easily be clipped a couple of hundred bucks to spend a few hours in a hotel room during your layover.

Just hang out at the airport bar for a while then snooze in a chair.

My favorite pastime in Moscow was to sit on a Metro perehod wall drinking beer. Nearly an every day event. My daughter once took a picture of me doing just that and captioned it 'mother in her natural habitat'.

But since they've cleared out a lot of the vendors around most the Metro stations, it's less fun and you're more exposed. But still there are plenty of places to enjoy your beer on the streets/parks/Metros and watch the world go by.

The best Metro for a street party is without a doubt, Arbatskaya. Especially in the summer. But you can often find a party there any time of year.
