| Hello. I am a college student in Oklahoma. I am writing a report on Russia for my English Composition class. I was hoping that you all would be able to help me find some information. I need to know about local customs in Moscow, good places to visit and things to do while someone is there. I also need to know about safety tips, well just about everything : o ). Anything would be great. Thank you. |

| Right know i lack information mostly on what your local customs are. Also i would like to know if you have many local laws that might differ from ours. I was on some other websites that said it was a very dangerous place. Is that true? I would also like to know any general advice you might have for some one that would be visiting your city. Thank you so much for your help. |

Hi Again,
Well just briefly.. For us who live in Moscow it is common to say that Moscow is a different country than Russia. And it is mostly true, especially comparing the way people live in Moscow and other cities. But of course people remain russian and there are a lot of common things as well. First of all Moscow differs very much from the center to the suburbs or how we call them "sleeping districts" where people usually just come to spend the night before another working day. The second thing about Moscow is difference in people, that is the place where you can see billionaires and poor bums on the same street and probably living next door, especially in the center. Living in th center is very expensive so only very wealthy people can afford to buy apartments here now, but some old moscovites and retired people have apartments there for long long time and thy don't want to sell it. .. and much more intresting things I can write about...
As to laws... It is true that due to the terrorist threat, there is much more police and militia in Moscow now then it was befoer. that is why it is necessary to carry ID any time you go out and be ready to show it to the policeman with no reasons just by his request. For foreigners it is also required to have registration stamp confirming your legal presence in Moscow. But in general you free to go anywhere you wsh and do whatever you want . You can smoke almost anywhere (except for public transport and some other restricted areas). For now it is still allowed to drink beer anywhere you want (even though our government is going to pass new restricting law) but just as I noticed many of my foreign friends are amazed by number of beer drinkers on streets and in subway. Also Moscow is a gambling paradise (which I don't think is a good thing but that is the way it is). Here are hundreds of slots everywhere. NIght life of Moscow is also wild and different. It ranges from standard pubs and bars to wildest streap shows and disco clubs.
that is in general.
I really do not know what to write about our local customs. As Russian people in general most Moscovites are friendly and hospitable. If you have friends here most likely you won't have any problems. Our food is also differs form us big time, but there are a lot of american bars and restaurants in moscow for those who don't want russian dishes
Tons of museums and some of them are really interesting. Such as Museum of war (not sure it is the correct name) on the Mourning Hill (all famous battles of World War Two on russian land), tretyakov gallery with Masterpieces and of course Kermlin.
As to being dangerous. It is statistics that Moscow is 20 times more dangerous than London but 2 times less dangerous than New York. So maybe it is not the safest place, but definetely note the scariest.
From all of my foreign friends, and most of them are americans, I never heard that they dislike the country. they loved Moscow they loved outskirts and real russia as well. I cannot say that they would want to live here but all of them definitely would like to come back.
There are many advice posted here for those who come to visit. I think they are true mostly. And I think to see the real life and people it is better to know somebody who live in the city and who can show it to you as is.
I am not sure if I answered any of your questions, hope it helps at least a little. It is impossible to give an overview of moscow in couple words as well as local customs of ours. So again, if you want some exact info, give me more clues what to write about. thanks |
