Hi all,

I am arriving in Novosibirsk on the 31st of December and am staying there for a while on a tourist visa. I will be staying in private accommodation for most of the time there and I have a couple of questions.

1. I have to register the visa in one working day, but when must I do that? Would that be on the 11th of Jan, due to the holidays?

2. On the migration card when entering, it asks for the address of the inviting organisation. Is this the travel agency or the hotel? Would it be safe to enter the private address or not?

3. We will probably register through the post office... has anyone had any problems with this in the past?

Thanks for any help Smile

1. Registration is required within 3 working days, so if you register by Tuesday the 4th, you will be within the rule.

2. I think the most proper way would be to enter the address of the hotel or travel agency that issued your visa invitation (sometimes called visa support). I wouldn't worry, if that address is in a different city from where you will be staying -- nobody has ever asked me where I will stay.

3. I haven't done post office registration, but as I far as I know lots of people do this without difficulty. Your visa must actually be registered by the person you will stay with, who must themselves be registered at the address where you will stay (yes, in Russia EVERYONE must register). There is a recent (2010) complication that makes it a little more inconvenient: a small per-day fee was added to the cost of registration. The money is not significant, but the fee must be paid at a bank branch and the receipt presented when you register -- and it can't be just any bank, but one that is officially recognized by the government (welcome to Russia!) Some big post offices actually have a bank window inside, which makes this a lot quicker. If the person you will be staying with knows the procedures, it will save time.

Thanks for your help. Yeah, last time I checked it was 2 rub a day. I'll be staying in Akademgorodok and have checked where everything is - all nice and close Cool

I was wondering about those dates though... isn't the 1-5 of jan public holidays?

Only 1 January is an official (legal) holiday, and anyway falls on a Saturday this winter, so it makes no difference in figuring when you must register.

However, the lion's share of activity in Russia shuts down during the first couple of weeks of January. In theory, though, the government still functions (to the extent that government ever functions in Russia).

I have not yet braved the cold of New Year's in Russia, so I don't know what this looks like in practice...
