I am trying to visit Russia in October, however my way of getting there is a bit unusual. I work for a large US airline. So, here is my itinerary. First i will fly to Japan, then take one of the ferry across the sea of Japan to Vladivostok. Then spend a couple of days in Vlad before boarding the trans-siberian to Moscow with a couple stop along the way. My final destination is to get in Poltava (Ukraine ). I would like to know, first do i need a visa to transit from Japan to Vladivostok ? second, i would like to know, can i get a business visa to complete my journey since i plan to spend a month or more?. Thanks for your kind assistance.

From my reading, US citizens don't need a visa to spend less than 90 days as a visitor in Japan.

The most practical type of visa for you would be a 90-day business visa. There is plenty of information about getting such visas on waytorussia, and many other websites as well.

I use a full-service visa company -- I send them my passport and a passport-style photo or two, they do all the rest. If you use such a service, the total visa expense to you should be about $300.
