Hey all,
I have a million questions about this whole confusing process. I will start with the most basic: Should I obtain a visa or Trans-Siberian tickets first? This may sound assinine but I can't find the answer anywhere. I would think the visa should come first but then it seems I need to know atleast some information regarding the trip to get a visa.
Background, if it matters: US Citizen leaving from South Korea. That I am leaving from Korea is a whole other issue. I have been living here and have a residency permit (the Russian consul said the permit should allow me to get a visa in a country that is not my own). To start, though, which comes first: the tickets or the visa?

Not such a difficult question -- you can do this either way. I expect that you'll have no difficulties getting a tourist visa.

Probably the train tickets aren't difficult either, but if you are not sure you can buy tickets for the dates you want, then get the tickets first.

When you apply for your visa, put an exit date 30 days after your entry date (the maximum for a tourist visa). And then plan to leave at least a couple of days before the exit date. Whatever you do, don't overstay.

Visa first. Always get your visa then complete your travel arrangements.

Never assume that a visa will be granted automatically.

Train tickets are easy to get, even in the peak season I have always been able to get them on the day I wanted to travel.
