I am an American who wishes to move to Russia and eventually apply for citizenship. I am aware of the requirements for that and I almost speak Russian well enough already. My problem is that six years ago I was arrested and charged with a first-time misdemeanor drunk driving charge. It wasn't a full DUI, it was a DWAI (which is supposed to be a lesser offense). No one was hurt and there was no accident, I was pulled over for having icy windows.

I do not have a drinking problem and I haven't had one alcoholic drink in six years (yeah the experience taught me my lesson well). I completed probation and public service. I even did extra public service by volunteering at a hospital. I felt really bad. Here's my question: is it possible to gain legal permanent residency and eventually citizenship there? I am willing to explain my situation and pray that they will believe I am genuine and am not a problem but of course I have to accept that they will do what they feel is best. I am not asking for legal advice, I'm just wondering if this is a hopeless dream and if I should give up on it. I have good honest, but personal reasons for wanting to move. I'm serious about it and I'm not running away from anything, I just want to live there.

I hope someone will understand. I am a good person, I just made a mistake that I'll never repeat.
