This is my travel itinerary.

I plan to fly into Moscow on the 25th of Jun, we have a 12 hr layover before our flight to Minsk, Belarus. We wanted to leave the airport go have dinner and then come back to catch our flight. We plan on spending 5-6 days in Minsk before taking a train to St. Petersburg. We will spend 3-4 days in St. Pete and then take a train to Moscow, spend the remainder of our time there and fly out of Moscow on the 11th of July.

I know i will be under the 30days, what I am trying to figure if a double entry visa would work or would I need a multiple entry visa?

I also am not sure if I could use a private visa for this trip. I have friends in Moscow that can prepare the invitation they have done it many time before. But can I use a private visa and a double entry visa?

I also understand I will need a separate visa for Belarus but no invitation is required. anyone have experience traveling to Belarus?

I live in New York and plan on going to the consulate in person with all the proper paperwork ready.

Do I need health insurance to travel to Russia and Belarus? Could I purchase this at the airport?

Thanks for the help. This will be my first trip abroad and I wanna make sure I do everything right.

I'm confident that a private visa, sometimes called a home-stay visa, can be used for only one entry.

For your itinerary, and double-entry tourist visa would work fine. You can obtain the invitation and voucher needed for a tourist visa application from various travel companies, including those available through this website (waytorussia).

I have not visited Belarus, but for a tourist visa, I understand that an invitation IS required.

However, if you are traveling on a US passport, and visiting a private person in Belarus for less than 30 days, you don't need an invitation, but must give that person's name and address.

Also, travelers on US passports don't need health insurance, in order to enter the Russian Federation. I don't know the requirements for Belarus.
