Hi all,

I just ran into a potentially big problem planning my overland trip across Russia / Wester Europe.

My plan was to buy a car in Japan (Subaru Forester) and ferry it to Vladivostok. From there I plan to drive across Russia, Mongolia, into Finland, and then tour around Europe for awhile. About five months in all.

Originally, a car exporter in Japan told me that I could be registered as a "driver" in Japan as a non-resident so the car would be under my name with Japanese plates. I just found out that's not possible. I also cannot register the car in the U.S. where I have citizenship. Is there any way I can ship the car to Vlad and register it in Russia as a non-resident on a multiple entry business visa.

I would really appreciate any help or advice!

Thanks,
Jack

Hey,

I don't know how it would work technically, because if you were the owner of the car and then it gets shipped from Japan to Russia, then you could "temporary" register it there and drive through (see http://www.waytorussia.net/Transport/International/Car.html )

But in your case you're the owner, but it's not registered anywhere, so they only way to do it would be to import the car, which means HUGE taxes at the border + without any legal support I think it would be super hard to negotiate with the customs, they'd try to rip you off, etc. etc.

Have you thought about buying a car in Vladivostok? If your plan is just to travel in this car through Russia into Europe and then get rid of it, maybe you could get a 2nd hand one?

I don't think you'll lose in the price because the importers in Russia must know all the cheapest places in Japan and the highest part of the price is the actual customs fee in Russia that you'd have to pay anyway.
